The RSPCA is appealing for volunteers to read stories to abandoned dogs at a shelter.
They say the Read and Relax project - the first in the UK - will help the animals trust humans again.
Dog trainer Richard Cooper said: "Many arrive traumatised after being badly treated, so this can be a great soother and make for a sociable dog."
Volunteers will read for half an hour to some of the 50 dogs at the RSPCA shelter in Radcliffe-on-Trent, Notts.
Staff said titles such as 101 Dalmatians, The Hound of the Baskervilles and Scooby-Doo are proving popular.
