A stray chocolate lab that plunged into a city sewage tank was saved thanks to a police officer who wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.
It happened at the city sewage treatment plant Tuesday when officer Jeff Skeie was cleaning out the dog’s kennel after it had been impounded by the city, police said. The lab got away and jumped into a 145,000 gallon concrete vault waste digester.
City officials said the digester is where sewage is treated with bio-organisms to break it down.
Skeie was able to get close enough pull the dog to safety.
The new owner of the dog showed up and was told about the rescue.
Gretchen Procop said she named new dog “Hershey” and bathed him for over an hour.
Police said Skeie also “bathed for an extended period.”
