More and more pets are being dumped for frivolous reasons, according to the RSPCA, who last week revealed that the number of abandoned animals rose to 7,347 last year - a 23 per cent increase on the previous year.

The charity blames the figures on our "throwaway society", and exposed some of the astonishing excuses that owners use, including a cat given away because she didn't match the new carpet, and a dog who was unwanted because "she hurts my legs when she wags her tail".
Here, FEMAIL showcases ten cats given to the RSPCA in Southall, West London, all of whom are now in urgent need of new homes.

What darling cats, I want to adopt them all! I cannot believe the reasons their so-called owners gave for dumping them. Just sickening! They're animals, not accessories for God's sake! People suck.

The only one that has an excuse is the parent of Rufus. Seems as though they tried their best, despite being homeless, to take care of the kitty. It's good that he's looking for a new home.

That's so sad, even though I can't have a cat as a pet..I would do all I could to keep my pet. I love Duchess!!

If there were a law that stated that your dumped off pet had to be euthanized in front of you if they weren't adopted in 3 months time, I'd bet people would be a lot less likely to ditch them in the first place.

at least, rufus' owner loved the cat but had to make for very tough choice

I looooove Duchess. She's so cute and beautiful.

I seriously have no idea how anyone gives up their pets. My parents have a temperamental and sort of dumb chihuahua but we all love him so much. I volunteer to babysit if they leave town even though he doesn't go to the loo in the right place and is sort of bitey. He may be borderline retarded but we love the heck out of him.

I hope the honesty of the animal shelter about the former owners embarrasses the hell out of them, because they deserve it. I read something like this a couple of years ago, and the reasons were just as astonishing. One story stuck out in my mind, and it still gets me teary eyed. Some asshole couple salled the SPCA to pick up their 14 year old Akita because they didn't want it anymore. The reason? They redecorated their home and the dog didn't fit the Asian decor.

Why are so many people so fucking retarded?
The thing about the 3 year old pisses me off; that child should know how to behave with an animal. I pretty much kept my son and the cats seperated until he could understand when it was okay to give them a pet and when they were looking a little too frisky.
