Default Missouri = puppy mill of mid-west?

A relative fell in love with a puppy in Missouri. She found the pup on a website and now really wants to get it. However, Missouri is supposedly the puppy mill capital of the mid-west? What resources are available for her to make sure this breeder is okay? What if the dog is not ok - what are her rights?

I said to call the humane society or animal rescue closest to the breeder's address to see if they knew anything.

Animals are sent via "puppy ships." Any news on that?

    Any ideas?

tell her to check with her local animal shelter, they need homes.

Well check if they are an AKC breeder? Ideally you see the pup's parents and the litter to check all is well and clean.

Puppy ships? That's how it will arrive to your friend? I'm confused

Looks like it's a done deal. My relative, who lives on the east coast, investigated by calling shelters in the area and also called the AKC too. Everything checks out favorably.

"Puppy ship" is how the dog gets from the mid-west to the east coast: naturally we're all concerned that this carrier is as careful as can be.

Jeez, why does anyone need to ship a dog across the country to adopt one? There are loads of puppies on death row right in her area, no doubt. People can be so irrational.

I am afraid this will end in two words: heart break. Hope I am wrong.

I have no problem with anybody buying puppies from breeders or out of pet shops, as long as you know that you are not buying from a mill.
It is hard to find the specific breed you are looking for sometimes.
But I don't think I would ever buy a dog from another state unless I could look it over and pick it up myself. Just to make sure I was buying what I wanted.
