Default Orangutan attempts to hunt fish with spear

A male orangutan, clinging precariously to overhanging branches, flails the water with a pole, trying desperately to spear a passing fish.

It is the first time one has been seen using a tool to hunt.
The extraordinary image, a world exclusive, was taken in Borneo on the island of Kaja, where apes are rehabilitated into the wild after being rescued from zoos, private homes or even butchers' shops. Scroll down for more...
Monkeying around: An orangutan clings precariously to overhanging branches in a desperate bid to spear a passing fish

"Orang hutan" means "forest man" in one of Indonesia's many languages and our long-armed cousins do indeed show a remarkable ability to mimic our behaviour.
This individual had seen locals fishing with spears on the Gohong River.
Although the method required too much skill for him to master, he was later able to improvise by using the pole to catch fish already trapped in the locals' fishing lines.
The image is part of a series taken for a new book, The Thinkers Of The Jungle, which also includes the first photograph of an orangutan swimming.
Thinkers Of The Jungle, by Gerd Schuster, Willie Smits and Jay Ullal, is published by Ullmann Publishing on May 5, RRP 29.99. To order your copy at the special price of 27 with free p&p, call The Review Bookstore on 0845 606 421.

Amazing. Have any of you watched Orangutan Island or Chimp Eden??? These animals are beyond smart and a bit ornery.

I was watching Animal Planet one day and the following scene
made my jaw drop to the floor.
I think it was in Indonesia where there are special projects to
try and keep the Orangutan population up. It's not a reservation
but they do have breeding programs and do inocculation etc.
There was this Orangutan mother with her baby on her arm.
She climbed up the wharf, untied the little boat that was there,
used her hands to peddle the boat through the water to where
a certain reed was growing and then proceeded to - this made
my jaw drop - tie down the boat to a tree, before starting to
    feed on the reed!!!!!
That blew me away. That she understood that if she wouldn't
tie the boat down, it would drift away from the reed again.
    How about that?

^^I agree. I also like to fancy myself evolving from orangutans than coming from those two douche bags Adam & Eve.
