Unhappy My dog is very sick... maybe dying

I took my beloved dog to the vet today thinking she's just got a little bug, and it turns out she could very well have IHMA, a disease where her red blood cells are attacked. She's extremely anemic and has so little energy. She didn't even want to go for a walk. I've been so sick lately too (now I probably have pneumonia) and I wish I had seen her sickness sooner.

She may die, and they're even talking about a blood transfusion.

She's on a very aggressive treatment plan with steroids and Danazoll (the human stuff- I had to got to Walgreens and pick it up). Everything depends on how she responds to the meds- and what the second round of blood tests show.

She is my baby, my girl, my walking partner, my best friend... I can't imagine my life without her in it. She has been the best dog I've ever owned.

    I am in tears....

I'm sorry your furbaby is sick, tkdgirl. She's very pretty.

Try to think positive - she'll be able to read your attitude, and if she sees you being up and positive, it will help keep her up and fighting to get better. I'm keeping both of you in my thoughts, and I'm praying for a full and speedy recovery.

Thanks McJag and Laurent, I have been very upbeat around her. And she's getting spoiled rotten- more so than usual. Now, she's sleeping peacefully at the foot of my bed- on the body pillow she decided to snatch. LOL.

    Anything for my baby...

I'm so sorry to hear that this has happened. Give her some time to respond to the meds. She's a beautiful dog.

Huge hugs are being sent your way. But please hold on to hope, its possible that the medication will help and there will be no need for tears. I am sending you so much love right now.

I wish the best for you believe me I know how you feel. I pick up Mulans ashes tomorrow.

When they tell you the life span of a shar-pei is 6 to 8 years it's because there is a silent killer that hits them at that time in their life. If they are one of the few and it doesn't hit them they can live to 14 years or more.
We lost Ushi in August and Mulan March 12th. No I haven't stopped crying.

I'm glad they have meds for your fur baby, where there is life there is hope especially in dogs. They sent me home with Harriett telling me she wouldn't make it through the night, that was in November 2005. She's eleven now and thinks she's a puppy - she's had a few transfusions in her day but for the last 3 years she's been healthy. So don't give up hope!

I'm so sorry, tkdgirl. I just lost a beloved cat last week but he was very old and it was his time. I'll keep both of you in my prayers as well. Love can get us through so much and modern medicine works miracles. Your girl is worth a miracle too~
