Default Dog of the day: Newfoundland

I thought I'd do a dog of the day for abit, mainly because I love dogs and it is interesting learning about different breeds.

Today is the Newfoundland, or Newfie.

Have you got one or ever met one? I have met a few on walks and they seem really gentle, and lovely to stroke...very soft!

This has loads of information on the breed http://www.thenewfoundlandclub.co.uk...ytywan2001.pdf

Before you go ooh-aah about the above picture, please remember that by about 6 months old those tiny little handfuls of joy will be starting to develop into large demons capable of pushing you and your family closer to the edge than you ever thought possible.

They are world-class mud-magnets and can bring an amazing amount of water and dirt into your house.

    Here are some photos:

They are incredibly patient and gentle and strong. In Canada, we use them as water rescue gogs (they have webbed feet) as well as pets.

They are wonderful. We used to have one in our old neighborhood!! Love them.

You know, Honey, there is a school of thought that says Labradors are decendents of these dogs. It's no wonder you like them Me, too!!

5!!! Wow, that's a lot of poop, food and drool. But it must be a lot of fun. I have a friend that has two great danes and it's like being in the house with a couple of horses!!

You aren't kidding. I have a fox red lab, and he's a drooler and a shedder and shitter........and he can't compare to these dogs.

My dog loves them though, they manhandle him, slap him around, he eats it up. One of them is his girlfriend ...Oh god, I sound like a deranged pet owner

Beautiful color for a lab...pretty rare, right? My friends had two yellow labs from the same litter and one was a light blonde and the other fox red. Gorgeous. I have a black lab and she's definitely a drooler, shitter and a shedder!! Not too mention, begger and eater and general all around slob!!

Newfies are lovely dogs, but they can have health problems and short lifespans. When I was a kid the neighbor went through Newfies like Kleenex; they'd live 5 years or so, drop dead of SAS, he'd get a new one, it'd live 5 years or so, drop dead of SAS, he'd get a new one, etc.

I thought the same thing when I saw one at the dog park when my Yorkie was 9 months..she was so friendly, and cute. I love big dogs, but I am a small dog kinda girl.

Honey, I love this idea... I love looking at animals, especially doggies!!
