Endangered pygmy hippo born at Bristol Zoo

(PA) The pygmy hippo calf is under three weeks old

A baby pygmy hippo has been born at Bristol Zoo.

The calf, which has not yet been named or sexed, arrived almost three weeks ago.

The pygmy hippo is threatened in the wild, where it is thought less than 2,000 survive

Lynsey Bugg, assistant curator of mammals at the zoo, said: "The calf is looking very strong and it certainly feeds well."

(PA) "It spends short periods of time in the water but is not quite as good at swimming as its parents," says assistant curator Lynsey Bugg

(PA) Fully grown adult pygmy hippos reach just 80cm (2ft 7ins) in height but can weigh up to 277kg (600lbs).

(PA) The baby hippo has not yet been on show to the public

(PA) Bristol Zoo Gardens is part of an international captive breeding programme for the species which is native to west Africa
