Default This Photographer Puts Flowers On Homeless Pit Bulls,

And She Does It For A Very Important Reason.

Photographer Sophie Gamand knows a thing or two about the true nature of pit bulls. It’s that knowledge that compelled her to undertake a photography project that spotlights just what it means to allow these dogs into your home.
She calls it Flower Power: Pit Bulls of the Revolution and in creating it she photographed over 150 pit bulls – all of whom were or remain shelter dogs and rescues. She designed it with but one goal: to educate.
Sophie used Baroque and Rococo aesthetics as her inspiration for the series. The flowers that she placed on the dogs’ heads represent the “ephemeral quality of life” and are meant to remind the world that pit bulls are “fragile and precious.”

She knows that the breed often gets a bad rap simply.

So she set out to soften their image.

America alone euthanizes somewhere around 1,000,000 pit bulls each year. Sophie calls this staggering number a “quiet massacre.”

These staggering numbers are exactly why she hopes these photos will change the fates of so many of these beautiful dogs.

She hopes that by challenging the way we view pit bulls, she can help change the way they’re treated.

Sophie insists that pit bulls are just like any other breed: they need “proper care, training, and socialization.”

The above photo/dog I think is so beautiful....oh my.

It’s their false reputation as “dangerous” that attracts irresponsible owners who are looking for “scary dogs,” she says that lead to her wish to change their image.

flowers head dresses herself for every photo.

The soft and feminine images are meant to contrast with the tough and harsh imagery that is commonly associated with the breed.

More importantly, if you’re interested in any of the models, Sophie put together a page where you can see which ones are still looking for homes.

The image surrounding pit bulls means that they often “languish in shelters.”

So let’s help these awesome dogs all find their forever homes!

Sophie says that Flower Power is about “challenging myself to approach pit bulls with a fresh perspective and an open heart. I invite the viewer to do the same.”

Cute, but I still don't trust them. It's not their fault but the aggression/kill instinct has been bred into their DNA and no amount of training and socialisation will alter that.

I once took care of a man whose pit literally tore his right arm off at the shoulder and chewed off his nose. One the way into the OR the man was begging with everyone not to put his dog down. Apparently there was a thunderstorm. The man came to get his dog out of the rain, something spooked him, and he attacked. I'll never be able to get that image out of my mind. That man was more terrified at the thought of losing his dog than he was at losing his arm. If someone can love a dog that much and the dog can still turn on him....I just can't.

i officially love you, Twitchy .

Oh my goodness these pics are cute and the dogs are so gorgeous.

i love the mixture of expressions on their faces.. some are amused, some bemused and some are "Aww maaan, do we REALLY have to do this?"

i've been bitten a couple of times by roaming dogs, once by this grouchy little furball who bit my ankle and another time i got bitten on my leg by a goofball Labrador.

There is good and bad in everything, i guess you could say.

    Especially humans
