Default Fatal Beaver Attack (not graphic, but real)

ETA: the video is of a non fatal attack (although the vid does show how ill-advised it is to bother a beaver). Thanks to Twitchie for setting the record straight. And screw Fox4News (and myself) for sloppy fact checking. As can be seen by the story on a different Fox News site, the fisherman wasn't just tailing the beaver, he had tried to grab the animal when he was taking the shot. Which sounds like a really dumb idea.

The fisherman wanted his photo shot with a beaver. The beaver had other ideas: It attacked the 60-year-old man with razor-sharp teeth, slicing an artery and causing him to bleed to death.
It was the most serious in a string of beaver attacks on humans in Belarus, as the rodents have turned increasingly aggressive when confronted by humans after wandering near homes, shops and schools.
"The character of the wound was totally shocking for us medical professionals," recalled village doctor Leonty Sulim. "We had never run into anything like this before."
Once hunted nearly to extinction in Europe, beavers have made a comeback as hunting was banned or restricted and new populations were introduced. In Belarus, a former Soviet nation between Russia and Poland, the beaver population has tripled in the past decade to an estimated 80,000, according to wildlife experts. That has caused beavers increasingly to wander into populated areas, creating more grounds for conflict.
The Belarusian emergency services said that this year, for the first time, they have received a rash of reports of aggression by beavers, which can weigh up to 30 kilograms (about 65 pounds) and stand about a meter (three feet) high. Officials have responded to some calls by sending out crews to drive away the animals, often by spraying them with water from a fire-hose.
The fisherman, who has not been named at the request of his family, was driving with friends toward the Shestakovskoye lake, west of the capital, Minsk, when he spotted the beaver along the side of the road and stopped the car. As he tried to grab the animal, it bit him several times. One of the bites hit a major artery in the leg, according to Sulim.

i didn't even know they had beavers in belarus.

i looked it up. apparently the attack was an anomaly and not typical beaver behaviour.

In April, a 60-year-old fisherman at Lake Shestakov in the country of Belarus was trying to catch a beaver for a photo when it attacked him, biting through his femoral artery and causing him to bleed to death. According to New Scientist, such attacks are rare to the point of being unheard-of, since beavers are vegetarians whose dentition has evolved to bite wood, not flesh.“Beavers are shy, nocturnal rodents, ungainly on land, that avoid immediate threats from natural predators or humans by quickly entering the water and swimming or diving to safety,” wrote Simon Jones of the Scottish Beaver Trial, a conservation program dedicated to reintroducing beavers to the United Kingdom.
“If this means of escape is not open to a beaver and it is cornered, then, like many wild animals, it will attempt to frighten off its attacker or defend itself or its young with a sudden lunge and bite,” Jones continued.
The scientist theorized that the animal must have felt cornered and, as a result, “fell back on its last line of defense.”
While beavers were hunted nearly to extinction in the 1800s for their pelts, the last few decades have seen a resurgence in their numbers, both in their European and Asian habitats and in North America. Since scientists have realized that the“tubby, spaniel-sized” animals are a boon to ecosystems, protections have been put in place to preserve their numbers.
Beaver reintroduction programs have been instituted in 29 countries in Europe. The Scottish Beaver Trial began in 2009 when a family of Eurasian beavers were set free in the Knapdale Forest on Scotland’s southwestern coast.
Beavers benefit ecosystems because the lakes and ponds caused by their dams provide habitat for many wetland species. The dams also trap pollution and sediments.
“The return of this native species is not cost-free,” wrote Jones, “but the physical risk that the beaver poses to people is far outweighed by the many biodiversity and other environmental benefits that this industrious creature brings.”
According to the Associated Press, however, Belarusian emergency services have reported a rash of “reports of aggression by beavers.”

Wildlife expert Viktor Kozlovsky told the APthat young beavers can be more aggressive as they leave the family group and attempt to stake out their own territory. Also, as nocturnal animals, beavers can become disoriented in daylight and react aggressively to humans out of fear.

The video also is NOT of the fatal attack, but a separate incident. The video is from Russia, the fatal attack was in Belarus.
As Canadian as possible under the circumstances

Any little critter can kill a human if they are angry enough and aggressive enough.

After you said that, I went back and my head is spinning. It's difficult to tell. I originally saw the story on the site below, which used an identical video from Liveleak. Then, so that I could embed it, I went to YouTube to look for the same clip.

Different guy, different country. Translation from the vid description.

Video shot in the Tver region. Andreapolsky district village Toropatsa. 400 km from Moscow. He knocked me down, I fell down and could barely dodged on all fours, even one shoe fell off the legs and the camera has fallen.

People really need to learn how to leave animals/nature ALONE. It's just stupid (especially if you are just armed with a camera) to go out and aggravate animals in the wild. Leave 'em BE! If they wanted their fucking pictures made, they'd head down to Olan Mills. It's ok for us to kill animals that come into our homes so I'm ok with the animals attacking people that seek them out to bother.

Don't feel bad, Bitter. I watched the original "Batman" and that sounds exactly like something Burt Ward would have said.
