Cat scares black bear off his turf
Cat proves his mettle by chasing black bear up tree
WEST MILFORD, New Jersey -- A black bear picked the wrong yard for a jaunt, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree -- twice.
Jack, a 7-kilogram orange and white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, often chasing small animals, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising.
"We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty,' never knowing he'd go after a bear," owner Donna Dickey told The Star-Ledger of Newark.
Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack's accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey property on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat.
After about 15 minutes, the bear descended and tried to run away, but Jack chased it up another tree.
Dickey, who feared for her cat, then called Jack home and the bear scurried back to the woods.
"He doesn't want anybody in his yard," Dickey said.
Bear sightings are not unusual in West Milford, which experts consider one of the state's most bear-populated areas. (AP)

Re: Cat scares black bear off his turf
Sounds like the bear was young.
I watched a program the other night about a cat that attacked a
burglar when the burglar starting going up the stairs to where his
owner slept.
I thought the cat attacked the burglar because of his love for his owner,
but a cat expert said that cats are very territorial and protective of their resources and to the cat, his owner is a food resource (as his owner provides his food).
I was a little hurt to think that I'm only a food resource to my cat.
Does anyone else think some love is involved?

Re: Cat scares black bear off his turf
Depends on the cat(I have nine). To some I am a food resource, a doorman, a masseuse and generally a speedbump on the road of their lives. Others just exude affection and really seem to enjoy my company.

That's one tough cat. That family does not need a guard dog or alarm system. I've got two cats, and while they undoubtedly consider me a food resource, I think they also consider me a mom and a playmate.

If you die, cats will eat your body.
Dogs will lay by your side and cry.

Well, at least one of my cats would cry for me.

Is that true? I thought that was an old wives tale.

Re: Cat scares black bear off his turf
I posted an article long long time ago in the news forum.
There was this old lady that died and a caretaker or someone found her with her toes bitten off, the authorities thought it was her cat that did it.

Re: Cat scares black bear off his turf
Moomies, you are obviously not a cat person! However, ghastly as this story is, the woman could have been dead for days, and the kitty must have been very hungry.
