My Dog Broke Her Leg

Has this happened to anyone's dog? She's being pretty good because she still tries to walk a little. My neighbor works for a vet and she told me to take her in tomorrow morning because that's when she'll be there. If she's there she would be able to give me a discount but I was wondering, about how much does something like this cost? I don't want to be in shock when I get there, still I have to get my dog better.

Elmo has never had any of his limbs broken so I wouldn't know exactly but any complicated surgeries he's had so far cost around $500~$600 (CAN) total. I remember IV and anesthesia was about $120, blood test $80 etc. The only thing he's ever broken was his molar, I think he was chewing on a bone too hard so he needed a dental surgery.

It sounds like your dog won't need a surgery though???

Vet prices and medications can vary wildly. In my area alone, four vets charge four different prices for neutering a cat -- I go to the least expensive and they are perfectly fine vets. Their flea/parasite medication is $22 less for the exact same thing at the vet near my house.

It's all about profit margins. Some of the vets tried to stop this other vet from being able to practice because he was still making a healthy profit, yet showing up the greed of the others.

It doesn't hurt to call around. Also, I've asked for a discount a time or two when I was really broke, and gotten it.

Well my neighbor is a vet assistant and she came and bandaged it up. She said that she should be fine for tomorrow morning, since she is still trying to walk around. The surgeon should be in, in the morning and that's when he'll be able to take a look at her. In the mean time she gave me some antibiotics and pain medication.

Walking around on a broken leg doesn't sound very healthy to me. The dog may be injuring her leg further by walking on it. Just because she is trying to walk on it doesn't mean it's OK -- it means that the dog is trying to do what she's used to doing.

She'll probably be all right for one night, but I would make every effort to keep her from walking on her broken leg.

Yeah, I've been telling her not to walk around. I know it's not good for her to walk on a broken leg but I'm gonna take her to the vet first thing tomorrow morning.

I'm guessing a broken leg will be pretty pricy, the aneasthetic alone is dear. I hope you didn't have too much of a shock, and your dog recovers well.

You cannot tell an animal not to walk on a broken leg. None of this shilly shallying around with vet assistants and the like. Take that poor dog to the nearest animal ER and be done with it. Unfortunately, even if you wait it's going to be pricey, in fact, if he's walking around on it and injures it more the price will climb accordingly to the amount of work they'll have to do to fix it.

my kitty broke a bone in his hip. I don't know how he did it. I took him to the E.R. vet and they recommended surgery. I consulted my regular vet and she said he could heal properly if I kept him inside and didn't let him jump around. It wasn't easy, but I did it and he healed fine and doesn't have a limp. The surgery was going to cost $900! I went for the conservative route first and it worked. If he wasn't healing properly with rest, I would have had to have the surgery. BUT, the animal MUST see a vet to get x-rays and see the fracture. good luck to your baby, let us know how she is doing.

It is quite possible that it isn't broken at all (unless you saw bone coming through-and I'm sure you would have taken her to the vet asap) and just bruised.

Sweetrebel was right, the leg wasn't broken at all. But she's got an abscess, I had never heard of such a thing.

Cats get them all the time. They are potentially fatal if left untreated. It's a puncture wound that is difficult to see until it gets infected. I wonder if your dog got in a fight with a cat?

Glad to know it wasn't a broken bone...what are they going to do for the abcess? I have heard of abcessed gums in people and it is basically a sac of infection...wonder where it came from? Well, good luck with your pup!
