Default Dog owners, do you squeeze your dog's butt?

Do you squeeze out that nasty stuff from your dog's anal sacs?
Elmo was at the groomer's just the other day and the groomer said the sacs were full. I don't squeeze his anal sacs, never even bothered to do it though I once had a roomate who wanted to do it to Elmo and actually did.

The groomer said for $5 she'd do it once a month for us.
I don't know if it's necessary but I remember reading somewhere that that fluid stuff can contribute to anal cancer??? If there are health issues as such then I'd prolly start doing it myself.

If you think it's crazy, you ain't seen a thing. Just wait until we're goin down in flames.

It seems a little cruel cuz Elmo obviously doesn't like it, it looks rather painful. He also seems disturbed when the Vet probes him in the ass with a thermometer

But yea anal infections? Hmm it's yucky too do it myself but I'm gonna think about speding this extra $5 a month.

Some dogs are more prone to anal gland problems than others, but if they need doing then I absolutely agree that $5 is absolutely well worth it. That stuff STINKS and there is a knack to it. If you don't know what you are doing you can really hurt the dog.

They are little glands in the anus that secrete something gross and doggy. If they get blocked they need to be emptied manually. Gag.

lol, Grimms. Didn't you have a Golden Retriver growing up or something?

Some dogs let out the fluid naturally when they poop though and other dogs just leak it sometimes etc.
    It's really nasty stinky stuff

I take my dog and cats to the vet and have them express the anal glands. It can be messy and stinky and I do not want to deal with that at home. Plus I would rather have the animals be pissed at the vet than at me.
They will often do it for no charge or a very small fee.

My vet told me that some individual dogs (no particular breed) have more problems than others. It's the luck of the draw really. One way to tell the glands need expressing (such a lovely term) is if you notice a weird, musky smell or if the dog starts to scrape its bum along the ground to try and relieve the discomfort. Ah the joy of dogs. My vet also told me that unless you really know what you are doing it's best to get an expert to do the job because it's fairly uncomfortable for the animal anyway and if you do it wrong you will cause real distress.

One of my dogs needed his glands fixed once when he was a puppy and never since. The other one has never had a problem. It's not THAT common.

I tried saving money and did it myself every few months.. Something went horribly wrong and ended up getting sprayed in the mouth and face.

Thankfully, our dog hasn't had a problem since.
