Two women have already been killed after the animals got free from their cages in the Hachimantai bear park in Akita region, northern Japan.
Hunters are searching the snow-covered area for the bears after two bodies, thought to be park workers, were recovered.
It's unknown how many of the 38 creatures are on the loose but six have already been shot dead.
The alarm was raised after attacks were reported in the park which was closed for winter.
There were three workers in the park at the time - a man and two women.
According to reports the man was able to escape, while one woman was badly mauled and another went missing.
The two bodies were later recovered.
A police spokesman said the hunt for the bears was not yet over.
He said: "Itís difficult to say exactly how many bears left their cages."
Emergency workers didn't approach the park for hours for fears of further attacks.
Police have asked local residents and school children to stay indoors.
The park is home to mostly brown bears and is open to tourists in summer months where they are permitted to feed the animals.

Uh....well no wonder the bears were pissed! They're used to getting fed by people!

The pen literally looks like a poured concrete foundation from a house being built. Like Guantanamo for bears.

I bet they were Kamchatka bears. Those things are scary.
