Default Lazy Little Bird!!!!

This is the second day I have caught this little booger lazing around on his back in the seed. Yesterday I got home from work, only to be horrified to see quivering legs, and a bird on his back, dying I thought. But oh no, he was just a lazy thing laying on his back eating at his leisure.

Well today here he was AGAIN! On his back, eating the seeds like a fat King!!

So cute! I had to share!

That is hilarious! (Even though he scared you to death). Maybe he is playing dead so no other birds will try to eat the food.

Never seen anything like that. I couldn't tell at the end - can he fly ok?

Sunning Birds No Cause for Alarm

    Tuesday August 23, 2011

Zoo patrons in Vienna have been alarmed recently by what seems to be a die-off of the seriemas at the Schönbrunn Zoo. According to the Croatian Times, the birds have been spotted laying limp on their backs with their feet in the air, their heads tossed back and their eyes closed, prompting concern from visitors. In fact, the South American birds aren't harmed at all, they're merely sunbathing, and zoo officials have posted notices to explain the birds' behavior during the current heat wave.

Seriemas are native to South America, and there are two species - the red-legged and the black legged. Neither species is endangered or threatened, and they are popular inhabitants of zoos worldwide. Like many birds, they enjoy sunning and may use the sun's heat to help control parasites, regulate body temperature or just relax, but the sprawled-out-on-the-back position is unique. Most sunning birds instead sprawl on their stomachs, spreading their wings to expose themselves to more sunlight.

What birds have you seen sunning lately? Share your sightings in the comments!

Arieslover, he flew away just fine both times I caught him! The first time I done grabbed the plastic glove to see wat I could do with the poor thing, and I could have sworn he looked at me like, oh bother, now I have to quit eating. I mean it was kind of a shock to see he is not dying at all, but EATING! LOL!

Twitchy, maybe he was sunning and decided to eat while doing so! It is as good a theory as my lazy bird theory!
