Default Instant Dog Mom. Just add puppies.

    Instant Dog Mom

By Pantherkut on August 29th, 2010

When a group of dog rescuers arrived at the market to show the dogs available for adoption, somebody had left 12 puppies on the street – 8 of them were approximately 5 weeks old.
In shock, the rescuers didn’t know what to do. The group had recently canceled several adoption days at the market because of bad weather, so they were over their capacity with puppies still needing to be adopted out. Also, the abandoned puppies were so small that they needed to be fed every two hours, including at night.

That’s when a spayed stray dog approached, lay down beside the shoe box where the puppies were sleeping, and began caring for them.

She wouldn’t let anyone get near the babies.

Very carefully, the rescuers placed the puppies closer to her.

She began caressing them and offering the warmth of her belly to the newborns.

The maternal instinct kicked in and…

after a few hours, she had milk and was feeding the puppies.

The rescue group named her Vida, which means “life” in Portuguese.
Source is a whole blog of animals: PantherKut – Instant Dog Mom

She's so proud of her shoebox of babies. I'm guessing that's a makeshift hot water bottle in there so the puppies wouldn't get cold before they were found.

    are you sure?

and would it be possible for a dog who hasn't given birth recently, and is spayed no less, to have milk within a few hours???

I don't know how much of the information given with the pictures is accurate since the original source was probably not in English. The dog may not have been spayed but it is possible for a mammal that has not given birth (recently or at all) to lactate.

I had a pitbull as a teen and my brother rescued a kitten that someone had left in the everglades. That pitbull would lay down and let the kitten suck on her teets. I don't believe she produced milk as she was spayed, but we would have to pull the kitten off of her because her nips would be bloody from her trying to nurse.
See, Whores, we are good for something. Love, Florida

I'm a bit torn on that. On one hand they've taken puppies away from their mother far too young, but on the other, they left them in a warm and soft box in a location where they must have known the animal rescue people had their stall. They were left to be found not like the puppies my mom once rescued from a sealed garbage bag at the dump.

OMG, so sad. But by rescue, that means they were okay, right? Bless your mom.

Three were still alive, the others weren't. Rottweilers. She kept one and found homes for the others. He was just the sweetest thing ever and loved everyone. Worst watch dog I've ever met though. Never barked once. He just greeted people. He lived a good long life.

Nice. So glad your mom happened along. Rotts are sweetie pies for sure. I can't imagine doing that to any living creature. Can not even fathom it. Squashing bugs doesn't count. I've let plenty of them go outside, but not all are so lucky.
