Default Amber, the cat, crowned pet slimmer of the year

A fat cat that shed more than two pounds was crowned pet slimming champion of the year by an animal welfare charity today.
Amber, who is the first cat to win the accolade, weighed 15.7lbs at the start of the challenge in September, more than 60 per cent over her ideal weight.

The 12-year-old cat from Edinburgh, who was put on a veterinary-controlled diet as part of the PDSA's annual Pet Fit Club competition, has since lost 2.6lbs.
Elaine Pendlebury, PDSA senior veterinary surgeon, said: 'It is much harder for cats to lose weight than dogs.
'The process has to be done very carefully under close veterinary supervision as too rapid a weight-loss can be dangerous.

'To lose 17 per cent of her bodyweight is an outstanding achievement.'

Amber's owner Penny Faulkner, 26, nominated her for the fat-fighting competition shortly after adopting the cat from a rescue centre in July last year.

She said she was delighted with the progress of her cat, who once had a habit of secretly raiding the fridge to feast on cheese and smoked salmon.
'The first few days were very hard,' Ms Faulkner said.
'Amber wasn't very happy with her reduced portions but I've tried to make it fun for her by using treat toys so she has to work for her food.
She added: 'You can see a real difference in Amber's shape, she no longer waddles when she walks.
'I've also noticed she's sleeping less and seems more interested in playing.
'We did have one slip-up when she managed to get her head inside the bag of food while I was in another room but apart from that I've been very strict which seems to have done the trick.'
The PDSA Fit Club final was made up of eight overweight pets, including five dogs and three cats.
Socrates, the biggest cat to ever take part in the competition, finished in second place after losing 3.3lbs.
The black and white cat from Newcastle weighed 22.2lbs at the start of the challenge, more than double his ideal bodyweight.
His owner, Bill Duncan from North Shields, said: 'The most important thing I've learned is that a pet's life is severely compromised by obesity, but you can make a change if you want to.'

Joint third place went to a two-year-old Labrador named Tara, from West Lothian, and a four-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier called Sasha, from Manchester.
Both animals lost 11 per cent of their bodyweight.

Man dems are some tubby pets! I thought my Samantha was bad - the only female feline I know personally who started off as a sweet little kitty and ended up being built like a linebacker for the Vikings.
