Default LA wildfire burning 3 miles from Daphneland Basset Hound Rescue

I put together this post from a bunch of different sources (linked throughout)- hope that's okay. There hasn't been much media coverage on this. So if anyone can help, please do! As a Basset Hound owner, this makes me so sad.

Daphneyland, a Basset Hound rescue ranch located in Acton, CA is near to the line of the Station wildfires.

This picture was taken at the ranch on 8/30/09 approximately at noon:

The fire is currently about 3 miles away from the ranch and mandatory evacuations are ordered for the other side of the freeway from the ranch.

A map (point A is the rescue location, point B is the mandatory evacuation area):
from: 6221 Shannon Valley Rd., Acton, CA 93510 to: Road Closure @34.492303,-118.219028 - Google Maps

You can read updates and donate to their Emergency Fund at FirstGiving:
Basset Rescue Network Inc. - Acton Fire - Basset Rescue Network needs help

Here are a few updates from the Kennel Manager:

2:44 AM, 9/1/09, Kennel Manager updates: “We are safe as of 2:44AM. Here from the property we would evacuate all animals with the assistance of several neighbors as during an evacuation it’s unlikely that non area residents could get through.” The shelter needs money for the expenses that comes with the smoke, ashes, fire and pending evacuation.

    1:41 AM, 9/2/09, KM said:
"...We were in evac mode in a big way when a gust came up and blew a wall of smoke and ash at us...We were on Stand By, and then about an hour alter it all calmed down....Let's hope an air purification system comes in quick after our interview with some network radio early evening on 9/1/09...Hear interview here http://tinyurl.com/lkop8p"

Also, some folks are trying to contact news channels (CBS/ABC/NBC affiliates out in CA area) about this. They want to try to drum up support from the human interest side. Sadly, Daphneyland isn't the only rescue in danger.

The shelter has 100+ dogs (basset hounds and mixes). They have a number of old, sick dogs that may not be able to handle the smoke, stress, and that means vet bills will come high.

If any of you can, please contact the media, forward this on, or donate to their fund, even if its just $5.

ETA- Here are some of their cute residents:

    Yes, he's got a wheelchair!

She just had puppies a month ago:

McJag you're an angel. Thank you so much for donating!

A few updates- they've got the wildfire mostly contained and now they are working on clean-up:
    The recovery began
Day #9 of Station Fire that has passed through Acton. 12:35 AM, 9/5/09, KM said: "....It's rather bizarre that today was sunny - yes, smoke residual was in the air but compared to yesterday....fire laundry day...Cesar Millan - Features - Laundry Day! - The Daphneyland Basset Rescue Relief Effort"

9:32 AM, 9/4/09, KM said: ..."They lifted the Acton evacs yesterday, with the condition if one thinks they are in danger, to immediately turn around and get right back out - as people begin coming back to the area we will have many such cases, and each is as equally heart breaking as the next....Yesterday a fireman arrived here - after 72 hours straight he had returned to his home to discover the Mt. Gleason fire camp ahd been over ran and burned. They had evac'd the fire camp - no one took his dogs. With tears in his eyes he asked where to start looking. "I know they most likely died, but I HAVE TO TRY TO FIND THEM, I cannot loose hope". We made many calls - and have his contact info.....

    Yesterday recovery began.....
It was a tough day in that after an event of this nature, we really do need to take a deep breath - and figure out where we are at, hunker down and begin the clean up and recovery efforts....."

1:43 AM, 9/3/09, KM said: "...This evening (9/2/09) the smoke is still hanging, the need for air purifiers is about our biggest need at this point in time- the wind is gentle and we pray it stays that way....while we still are being hit with smoke in the afternoons, the fire appears to be staying put - and that is a very good thing. We're not out of the woods - but we are at least getting a break. Rumor of possible rain and thunder storms is on the horizon..."

Some volunteers from The Dog Whisperer's foundation came out to help them with 'fire laundry':

Volunteers for the Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation contacted Daphneyland directly and offered to take time out to help. Representatives from the Foundation drove out to the ranch to meet with Dawn, pick up several days' worth of soiled bedding and linens, and drive it all to a local Laundromat to have it cleaned in what amounted to two full trips and over 45 loads in industrial-sized commercial washers! When the Herculean task was finished, the weary volunteers were treated to a private tour of the facility culminating in a very friendly (and exceedingly slobbery) thank you and farewell from the rescue's resident hounds. But is this the end of the story? Hardly! Daphneyland remains in harm's way as the fire makes its way inexorably outward from the center of the Angeles National Forest, and they will need all the help that they can get to set things back on track once the threat has passed. Eye cleansings for the Bassets, bathing to get the smoke and ash out of their fur, and what is sure to be many more loads of smoky laundry will require a continued volunteer effort, whether the ranch is evacuated or remains local.
