Default SPCA exec's blind/deaf dog dies after she accidentally leaves him in her car

Va. SPCA exec's dog dies after 4 hours in hot car
Wed Aug 26, 12:30 pm ET

RICHMOND, Va. An executive for an anti-animal cruelty group says her 16-year-old blind and deaf dog died after she accidentally left him in her hot car for four hours.

Robin Starr, the CEO of the Richmond Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, says she didn't realize "Louie" was in the car until noon. Starr's husband, Ed, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch he put the dog in her car as she got ready for work Aug. 19. She often took the dog to work with her.

Robin Starr took the dog to two clinics, but he died of kidney failure.

The National Weather Service says the temperature had reached 91 degrees by noon that day.

The board of the SPCA says it still supports Starr, who has been CEO since 1997 and does not plan to resign. It was unclear whether she would be charged.

She may stay together with her job, but I'll be interested to see if she and the hubs makes it. I'm guessing she'll blame him for not bothering to mention that her blind and deaf dog was in her vehicle.

the husband certainly should be charged for endangering the welfare of the dog leading to his death. the poor dog, if that were my dog out there all alone, i'd never forgive myself.

still, how do you miss that fact that your own dog is in your car??

No, he shouldn't. It was an accident. He probably assumed she would see the dog. Unless it's a toy, they're kind of hard to miss.

I live in Richmond and Robin has been awesome for the SPCA since she took over on 1997. This was truly a misunderstanding, an accident, and I don't think it should affect her job. She never would have let her dog die that way.

i disagree, he should have let his wife know he put the dog in the car. by not doing so he put the dog in jeopardy. especially with the weather as hot as it apparently was. if there was any chance she wouldn't see the dog (and she didnt'), he should be held at fault, the poor dog died.

while it was an accident, it wasnt very smart on the husbands part. putting a disabled dog in the car by itself? you wouldn't do that to a child.

I agree. I don't believe he meant the dog harm, but it was a serious lapse in judgment not to tell her. Like you say, no one would do that with a disabled child, or any child for that matter.
