I didn't say they were, hence the bolded "if" and the "I wonder if he thinks it would be immoral..." in my first post.

And of course if EVERYONE stopped breeding, we'd eventually become extinct barring any major evolutionary changes like asexual reproduction. Now, of course it is not going to happen that everyone decides to stop breeding, and I am not worried about extinction. I'm just wondering what these people do expect to accomplish. It seems pretty futile for just a few people to decide not to breed for the sake of the planet. Do they have any thoughts on how many people should be having children, and on who those people should be? I'm trying to figure out the mindset.

I think they didn't want children anyway. The one woman said she has no maternal instinct. The "save the planet" thing is just some kind of justification where none is necessary. You have to present some excuse for not having children that won't be seen as selfish, even if it is seen as "barking mad".

As for myself, I think not feeling maternal is a plenty good enough reason.

Isn't it, though?!

"You may not WANT anal sex, but get the lube ready as you may meet a man who does".

"You may not WANT to stay home barefoot and pregnant, but you may meet a man who wants you to".

Sure, but it also would seem futile for any one person to recycle/try to conserve energy. By itself, every single contribution is meaningless, but collectively, every little helps.

Not that I think people should present justifications either. I don't want kids, and it's not for environmental reasons (though it's a good byproduct!). But I do think some people are genuine with the environmental angle.

The infuriating part of this article is the doctors who dismiss an adult woman's desire not to have children. For a doctor to say to a woman, "you may not want children, but you may meet a man who does" is so insulting on a variety of levels. Agreed.

Really, I don't blame someone for wanting a kid and not thinking about how their kid impacts 'the environment'. Maybe the world will do itself in one day, and maybe that's the inevitable, who knows? All things come to an end in some way, don't they?

What bothers me is how arrogant people can be and how people think we are the most meaningful things in the world. It's so egocentric. If we die out, we die out. If it wasn't meant to be, it wouldn't happen.
