It is usually a belt, skirt or something similar that is removed during the routine and used for the remainder of the stage time. At one time, sportwear outfits had actual jackets that were removed. Kind of like a runway model who takes the jacket off to show the outfit underneath. Then jacket tricks became popular and little by little pro am evolved. Now it is more of a dance routine and the tear away replaced the jacket as there are more variety of tricks that can be done with it.

^ So, it could be like a skirt that the girl wears on stage and takes off to reveal a new outfit underneath?

From what you describe, it sounds inappropriate for a little girl to do that.

    Kind of sounds like stripping.

Just caught the end of "Little Miss Sunshine" and nearly died laughing. I love how Greg Kinnear's character is fully disgusted by what he sees onstage. Little Olive (Abigail Breslin) is so cute in her swimsuit compared to the little girls dressed like hookers.

There were little girls dressed like this in Little Miss Sunshine?

    Sorry, couldn't resist!

I'm gonna keep reading to see if you dared to answer any of Grimm's perfectly valid questions. I'd like to know the reasons, too!

I'd also like the following questions answered by any pageant mother or father. Feel free to copy and paste if you don't understand the quote button.

Why do little girls (AND BABIES!) need to wear make up?

Why do little girls (AND BABIES!) need to wear fake hair?

Why do little girls (AND BABIES!) need to be tanned beyond any natural skin tone?

Why do little girls (AND BABIES!) need to wear fake teeth and nails?

Why do little girls (AND BABIES!) need to wear skimpy outfits that would look trashy on any adult female?

Why do little girls (AND BABIES!) need to wink and pout and blow kisses?

Why do little girls (AND BABIES!) need to "strut" and shake their little behinds?

Why why why must you all insist they do this in order to win?

Or you may also answer the following questions:
Why must you go bankrupt to win a title?
Why must marriages fail to win a title?
Is a title and a crown really what matters in life?
If there were no titles to be won, no crowns to wear, would you continue to pursue a crown and a title week after week after week after year after year?
Bringin' up old shit since 1998.

Yes, several well known pageant girls were actually cast as extras for the movie to create a more realistic scene.

Loved that movie. Abigail Breslin is a great actress.

Yes, I know. I am good friends with one of the families. But my point was that their swimsuits in no way look like outfits that real hookers wear as shown in the photo.

You are right, those hookers had more clothes on.

There's also the butt out pose with the front leg up on the ball of the foot.
