Default CHEERLEADING: Too slutty and/or competitive now?

So what do you think? Has cheerleading become too trashy, with stuff like too much makeup, etc.? Too competitve and cutthroat? Too involved and risking injury for cheerleaders?

*If this forum is stictly for pageants/manatee stuff then a mod or admin can move it or delete it.

The high school teams are fine but a few years ago they did start to cross the line with skimpy "Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader" outfits. The groups that frighten me are the private cheer teams. These girls start at age 5. They have no teams they cheer for - it is simply competitive. The outfits and routines are very sexualized. Even with that they are athletes. They train hard through dance, gynastics, etc.

My nieces were in this for a short period when they were 7-8. My sister pulled them out within months because the Moms were crazy - the coaches were in it for the money and it was not healthy for the girls. They were tiny girls to begin with and the coach said they should try to lose weight so they could be fliers. Her daughters are both cheering in high school now. It is finally recognized as a letter sport. They are cheering for the school teams and do competitions against other school teams only.

I voted for three out of the four. I remember a few years back I went to dinner at the Inner Harbor here they were having a cheerleading Competition at the Convention Center...there was glitter and pasties(oops, I mean bra tops) everywhere!

LOL - my nieces love it at the high school level. The parents only involvment is helping with 1 fundraiser each fall and driving them back and forth to practice - just like if they were on any other sports team at school.

Personally, when you get to late high school years, college level, etc. I do not have a problem with slutty attire. They are adults/near adults at that time, so no big deal to me. YMMV of course (yeah they use that Your Mileage May Vary over there at another board).

I just do not know how slutty it gets, and at one age that starts, though.

I have seen recent articles saying that cheerleading injuries are skyrocketing. It is getting more and more competitive, with these professional squads causing it to get more athletic at all levels, resulting in injuries.

Oh and worst cheerleading travesty of all time?

Mickey Toni basil! (my computer is fucked up so if somebody wants to post the video from youtube?)

    Are there MANATEE cheerleader moms?

I love cheerleading, but I think it's gotten out of hand.

High school cheerleading has gotten to the point now where it's basically just a highly sexualized, hardcore dance team.

I don't like the heavy emphasis on dance that is in cheerleading now. If you want to dance around in a skimpy outfit and shake your ass to get attention, join the dance team. I think cheerleaders should stick to tumbling, stunting, and actually cheering for the athletes. A little dance is fine, but I think that when you've got to be a fantastic dancer to make the cheerleading team, and the focus is more on promoting yourselves than supporting the team, something is wrong.
