Well here's the thing.....
If it were my child, a 12 year old girl, she better not be talking to a 16 year old guy to begin with; that's just uncalled for and the first red flag. A 16 year old boy is FAR to old for a 12 year old girl. This tells me from the get-go that the parents weren't really that involved in the childs life. Let me have done that at 12, my parents would have beat my ass and locked me in the house....straight to school, straight home afterwards.
As for the computer.....simple solution. Lock it with a password or take it out of the home or child's reach.
Point blank....if her parents were looking after her as they should, she would have never talked to Josh, much less became involved with him on online and therefore would not have been depressed to the point of killing herself after he stopped talking to her. If you want to blame this Drew lady, you need to blame her parents too.

I was happy to hear that Lori Drew was indicted. It seems like it has been over a year they've been trying to get something to indict her with.
I don't think Lori Drew killed Megan. I know Megan killed herself. However I do believe that if Lori Drew had not posed as Josh and had not inflicted that abuse upon Megan, she'd probably be alive today. Therefore I believe that the events leading up to Megans suicide were inflicted upon Megan by Lori Drew.
I think Lori Drew is a vile, nasty piece of shit and I just sincerely hope above all that she understands the pain she inflicted upon Megan. Because I don't think she acknowledges that at all.

^^I think that's a good point CCK---she doesn't acknowledge any wrong doing. I think that is a big part of the issue that people are having. She has teenage children too---how would she like it if someone did this to HER daughter??

Sweetie: why is it that parents don't seem to think of those things, as if they don't have the right to do something their kid doesn't want them to? It's as if they have to have their kid's approval of how they run the house. They pull this same shit with cell phones, as though they have no choice.
Cynic:I agree with possible child abuse charges.

^ Because they really have no clue what their children are doing; therefore they don't see a problem. It's just lazy parenting.

Since none of the three of us have children......I don't think we have much room to say what the parents should have done.....just sayin'.....the law does not allow you to lock them in closets until they are of age.....

^^Ah, I stand corrected....I knew you were married....(I stick pins in a voodoo doll of your husband ....as I am next in line .....)....but I didn't know you had a small one.....
....on this side of the state.....they take children away from bad homes and put them into worse ones.....they continue to do so until the kids end up dead.....I guess I'm just tired of seeing dead kids.....it's one of the few things I can't seem to make jokes about.....now UGLY CELEBRITY children who are put out there to be starlettes by their parents.....

I don't have a small one, I was just stating my husband can act like a child........as men do.
You crack me up....can I borrow that voodoo doll today? hehe
This side of the state in pretty good when it comes to children, DSS and child services stay on top of things around here; they will remove a child from a bad home in a heartbeat.

Whether you have kids or not doesn't change the fact that parents decide if a kid has access to a computer in the home, if passwords are used, if computers are accessible when no parents are home, etc. Same with cell phones. If you insist that they neeeeeed one in case of emergencies, you can get a prepaid one that allows you to dial 911 or to program a parents number into it. Otherwise you're just letting them have one as a status symbol or because everyone else has one. I think parents have willingly abdicated much of their authority to their kids. Why? I don't know and I don't want to know.

I'm sorry crumpet, but your argument just does not hold water for me. That's like saying if someone didn't allow their child to drive then they wouldn't have been killed by a drunk driver.

Ok, I have 2 small children, not old enough to have a computer or cell phones...but let me just say this:
I think the reason that parents do not take away computers or cell phones from children is because they want them to be ACCESSIBLE. I agree with everyone that doesn't have kids that says 'gee, it's easy, take this stuff away--what's the problem?'...to SOME DEGREE. Computers, it could be argued, might be needed for school. Sure, drive them to the library right?? None of this is as easy as it sounds to do--especially if you work, and have other responsibilities. Is it being lazy? Perhaps, but not necessarily.
I know kids that are 7-8 yrs old with cell phones, simply because their parents want to know where the hell they are all the time. AND in case of emergency. Just saying....
I am completely disagreeing with anyone. I just wanted to point out some other possible factors.

I understand computers may be needed for school, but myspace and communicating with older boys doesn't quailfy as school work. Don't all them to have internet access if they are putting their lives on the line and breaking your rule; make them crack open a book.

I'm sure it's possible to dismantle a program, but remember too--kids are sneeky (least I was) and sometimes they can find a way around such pesky things.
And, they can go to friends houses and use their computer, etc. It just never ends.
I need to take a serious computer course before my kids become teenagers because otherwise, I won't know what the hell is going on.
