Re: Whistleblower blows whistle on Teflon and Dupont. No more non-stick pans?
Martha Stewart said it's best to bake your wok in the oven to treat it. But my wok has a wooden handle so I don't want that part to burn while baking. I think it would be a good idea to bring it to a Chinese kitchenware store and get the pro to do it.

But then there's the upkeep. Oiling it every time you use it. That's where I always go wrong. Plus, you're not supposed to use soap on it? It's all too confusing for this little woman.

My mom just puts it on low heat on the stove. Sometimes she'll just put it in the oven, i'll ask if she oils it or not

But once she uses it, how does she wash it? I know the Chinese keep using the same one for years and years and only oil it. They say it helps with the flavor. Hmmm...I bet it does.

Oh I think you can wash it with water though, just not with soap...which wouldn't clean your wok all that well.

Re: Whistleblower blows whistle on Teflon and Dupont. No more non-stick pans?
in all honesty, i think she just rinses it out, and then heats it up to dry the oil a bit....she does a intensive wash once in a while, but i'm not sure what she uses

Re: Whistleblower blows whistle on Teflon and Dupont. No more non-stick pans?
Well, you treat a wok the same way you do a cast iron pan, as far as I know. My mom has her grandmother's cast iron skillet, and still uses it all the time. You just rinse it out with hot water, wipe it out, and put it away. Every once in a while you can wash it with soap and then "season" it again... rub it with oil and bake it in the oven, and it's good to go.

I guess I'll give my wok one more chance...
I'll try baking it in the oven, hopefully the handle won't fall off.
I don't mind oiling it cuz the rust bothers me more than anything.

Re: Whistleblower blows whistle on Teflon and Dupont. No more non-stick pans?
URBAN LEGEND:
Dupont lobbied to get marijuana outlawed in the 20s and 30s because
they wanted to corner the government contract on rope.
At the time, Dupont wanted a fat government contract -- to manufacture
all the rope for US Navy vessels. They intended to make rope out of
nylon. But the word was out that hemp (from the cannabis plant)
could be woven into rope that was stronger than nylon. Dupont's
CEOs, according to this legend, lobbied to outlaw marijuana and all
its byproducts in an attempt to corner the market. (Did they fund
the production of the inane film " Reefer Madness" (1936)? I can
only suspect.)
To my knowledge, pot was outlawed in October 1937, and its byproducts
were subsequently made illegal as well. I don't know for certain whether
Dupont secured any contracts to provide rope for the US Navy.

DuPont is already under criminal investigation for failing to notify the government that PFOA might have been linked to birth defects of children born to workers at a DuPont plant in West Virginia.

EGAD! I missed that part the first time I read it. That's appalling.

Re: Whistleblower blows whistle on Teflon and Dupont. No more non-stick pans?
I have a WONDERFUL cast iron skillet from my grandma! Let me tell you I had to struggle it out of the hands of my cousin who is a chef at a big-ta do restaurant in philly.
Althought this is diet CRUSHING, you have never tasted pancakes and bacon until you have cooked them in cast iron...mmmmmmm

Well, it's time for cast iron and copper. Dead expensive but then again, they last forever.
