Yeah, in my case, in between having kids I'll need to be on some form of birth control. Either the pills or a shot. Otherwise it's lap surgery to clear out all the endometriosis every year. Even once I'm to the point where we're done having kids, I don't want that coming back, it's painful.

Have you been tested to see if you carry BRCA2? My friend's mother died of ovarian cancer last April. My friend's ob/gyn suggested she get the genetic testing done and sure enough, she had the mutation. She went ahead and had a complete hysterectomy. Turns out her two aunts have it as well. One aunt had a complete hysterectomy about 10 years ago, the other had one last month and the doctor was convinced that she already had cancer. The other thing, having that mutation can cause a list of other cancers to pop up. My friend had melanoma a few years ago because of it. She had to fight with the insurance company (BCBS) about getting a copper IUD. They never did approve her for it. She can't take the pills at this point because of the melanoma, it's surprising to hear that your doctor is putting you on it as a preventative for cancer.

Somehow I saw this ages after you posted, mklady. I haven't been tested for BRCA1 or 2. Maybe I should consider it more seriously. The full test (rather than the limited one) can be very expensive; we use a health-savings account, and the testing would wipe out the money that's in it, money we need to pay for my son's ongoing high medical expenses.

A friend of mine is a genetic counselor, and she thinks my risk is only average even though both my mother and grandmother have had ovarian cancer. I'll have to ask her why she thinks that.

I'm not sure I would want a hysterectomy at my age, at any rate. I'd probably have to believe that I already had cancer to go ahead with that.

Birth control pills are definitely helpful in preventing ovarian cancer--that's well-established. I don't have anything like melanoma to complicate the picture.

I just learnt that my bf's uncle and aunt used to run a pharmacy, and that they wouldn't sell BC or condoms. Bastards!

Birth control pills are used in my country as means to avoid bad menstrual pains and irregularities, among other things. I got them myself when I was 14 because I had very long periods and they were very painful.

Oh and to add, wtf is wrong with countries banning something like this? This is just absolutely ridiculous.

Because the person chose to have sex without contraceptives.

Same principal as not holding a liquor store owner responsible because someone bought booze from them and got arrested for DWI.

But I do think this is ridiculous, especially the guy sprinkling holy water on the shelves. Religion is such a crock.
