I have severe asthma so I will always get a flu shot.
You have asthma and you are taking what you feel is a precaution. That is why I said if it makes someone feel safer, do it. My experience with knocking on death's door twice due to the flu, and only immediately after receiving those shots, makes me wary.

Even though I am by no means a conspiracy theorist, I also do not put complete faith in the truthfulness of the powers that be. Too many have been caught in shady situations. Only the people who create and manufacture the vaccine know exactly what is in it.

My SIL, who is pregnant, got the flu, and then pneumonia. We were pretty freaked out because that has been an H1N1 complication that has resulted in death. Luckily, she is a physician, and was immediately seen by a colleague who confirmed it and put her on a regimen of pregnancy-safe antibiotics.

Antibiotics do not work on viruses I miscarried immediately after having the flu in 2000 (didn't know I was preg). I hope your SIL and the baby are doing well

No, but it would work on a secondary bacterial infection that causes pneumonia

What Grimmlok said. Did you know that high fevers of the mother during pregnancy increases a risk of schizophrenia in the child? I probably should not even type that because I don't feel like digging up the source.

Thanks for adding that, Grimmlok. The way I understand it, there is viral pneumonia and bacterial pneumonia. My SIL had bacterial and took one of two antibiotics that are regarded as safe for pregnant women.

They just had their first ultrasound this morning. It's a girl, and she is healthy.

You know who used to be the president of the company that makes Tamiflu? Donald Rumsfeld, I kid you not.

I got the shot, and wouldn't think of not getting it. Thousands of people died, whether or not you knew them personally.

Yes, they did, but should it really be considered an epidemic? I am in no means downplaying that, and it is tragic, but I cannot help but to wonder if the gov't made it out to be even worse than what it was?

Told ya! It's all about Big Pharma.

The problem is (a) the media beatup/panic about it and (b) in these days of amazing medical achievements people forget that good old fashioned influenza can still be a killer. This is just another flu and unfortunately peoole die from the flu every year (500,000 worldwide on average). I'd be interested to see the mortality stats for the dreaded Swine Flu - run away! run away! - but I bet they are no better or worse than any other flu season.

I don't generally think the big bad guvmint is out to get us but I do not believe that the big bad guvment has our interests at heart a lot of times and I certainly do believe that many members of the big bad guvmint would sell their own children if they thought they could a) make a fast buck and b) get away with it.

As far as 1 in 3 pregnant women, etc. how many women in reality are we talking about? And how does that compare with the pregnant women in Portugal and other countries who did take the vaccine and subsequently miscarried? I'm not saying this story is absolutely true but I'm inclined to believe it more than disbelieve it.

Figures even more. Many people tie aspartame to the growing number of auto-immune disease diagnosis, thinking it may be a trigger.

i think the vaccine is a good precaution for at risk groups - old people, pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems from other illnesses or conditions, asthmatics, etc.
and that goes for h1n1 as much as for any other strain. i'm just saying that h1n1 is no different and no worse and i never understood the level of panic in the media over it.

Actually the h1n1 is quite different from the usual strains, in that it severely affected people who were NOT in the usual high risks groups-the ones you listed. Young healthy adults were the ones getting the worst illness from the swine flu. In this it IS like the pandemic of 1918. It was just not as virulent nor as widespread. That "Spanish Flu' also targeted otherwise healthy people bewtween the ages of 20 and 40.

I think we are lucky this thing did not 'pan out' as badly as predicted.

But I am sure the freaking drug companies are VERY happy with all the profits anyway...of course.

Agree, but I'd still like to see the overall Swine Flu mortality stats (and I bet the Big Pharmas don't want us to know).
