Ok GRs, we can sit here and blame the government, western culture, yada yada yada, OR we can all make a conscious effort NOT to buy things you use once or twice...then throw away. Yes, yes, I know, swiffers ARE pretty cool...but a mop does just as well and you can use it for a very long time, if you won't think of the planet, think of the SAVINGS, lol.

Makes you wonder about all those ships that dump their stuff overboard. All this stuff can't all be coming from land.
According to this:

Quote:
Around one-fifth of the junk is thrown off ships or oil platforms, while the rest comes from the land.

^I use 'em sometimes...but I recycle them too! I think of buying organic foods and recycled/long term purchase items as my charity work. I'm not rich, but I buy these items instead of cheaper ones to support the people who believe in the same causes I do, healthy farmers and enviro-friendly commerce.

Maybe I'm a little naive but I have a hard time grasping it HONESTLY being twice the size of America...for our sake I hope it's exaggerated!

Really? Hard to fathom? Think of how many things you see spilling out of trash cans, littering the streets, washed up on the beach, on the sides of roads in the country, forest, city. Now times that by 5 billion people (I'm assuming 1 billion are too poor for even trash).

^Highly developed countries whose constituants would sue the bejeebus out of the gov't for daring to place their own trash in landfills at their doorsteps.

with that much trash possibly out there in the water, when/if it's removed can you imagine how the water level would drop?
