I find what the parents did rather repellent, but I don't know what I would do if I were in their situation. I know from friends' experiences that taking care of disabled or "special needs" kids can be a nightmare. One friend of mine has a 14 year old stepson, who has some physiological problems and basically functions on the level of an 8 year old. He's gone into seizures a couple of times and has 1)broken his stepsister's arm and 2) repeatedly slammed his young stepbrother's arm into a car door. He does these things and later has no memory of them and does not understand why he is being punished. He is probably going to end up in a group home. I don't want to judge these parents, because I don't know how I would handle their situation--just glad I don't have to!
