See? This is why people think NYers are elitists. As long as they get theirs, everything is fine and dandy.

And don't make it about me. You and I both are fairly affluent, and can fly where we want to fly what we what we want. I just came back from Baker Beach. I just think it would be great if everyone else could have the same rights. There's something very wrong, though, if a person is caught on what was a historically clothing-optional beach in Virginia, like Chincoteague, and ends up on a sex offender list with actual rapists and child molesters. That IS a fear of nudity. And I'm not going to solve that by being Roscoe Parks.

ETA - WCG - sorry for sounding over the top about this. I promise that I am dressed about 99% of the time.

Dude I don't care if you're naked. I think you should have the right to do so. And all kidding aside it's absolutely horrifying that going to a nude beach would get someone on a sex offenders registry. There's something really wrong there.

It's a cultural thing. Nudists, especially American nudists who are only a few generations away from the Mayflower Puritans, will always be regarded with deep suspicion as weirdos at best and more likely as depraved sexual perverts. Nudity = Sex. Period. People still clutch their pearls at the merest hint of nipple. It's the same in Oz to an extent and nude beaches are a rarity and usually very gay-centric. Public nudity is frowned upon and it's a brave woman who goes topless on the beach. Europeans, especially Northern Europeans, are happy to let it all hang out.

^^ I thought there would be a lot of nude beaches in Oz. I hate other people's skin in general.

However, it's not so great for the many many people who live REALLY far from Gunnison and Haulover. And they shouldn't have to pay to go to a private resort.

And if you use a beach blanket or towel you can keep sand out of all your orifices.

I'm way too cold-natured to be a nudist.

I'm not sure which part of Australia A*O lives in, but when we were in Sydney, we visited three different C/O beaches - Obelisk Beach, Cobbler's Beach, and Lady Jane Beach. I know that's just one part of OZ, though. I don't think there were any in Melbourne.

I also agree with A*O saying that America's problem with nudity seems to stem from the fact that our country was founded by people who thought their country of origin wasn't uptight enough for them.

AO, aren't you originally from that country of origin?

I'm in Melbn and the cooler ("freezing" sooky locals would say) climate isn't conducive to nekkid beaches. There are a few very unofficial ones but I'm afraid they ARE frequented by creeps and weirdos. There's one just down the road from me and the cops are always being called there to deal with "lewd public acts".

I've gone to beaches all my life, and sorry, most of what's there, I wish they were fully clothed. GROSS!
