When you think about the fact that the people that built the cathedral didn't have architecture or engineering degrees, but managed to build one giant piece of artwork that lasted hundreds of years and now we can't build a strip mall that doesn't fall apart after a decade. We are so careless with history and we almost don't deserve it. This is so painful to watch.

So sad. Notre Dame is a wonder and I am so glad to have been able to visit 2 times.

A friend from home lives in Paris now and she posted pictures and video. Looks like all of Paris is outside watching in horror.

I'm heartbroken. I have a trip planned in July and I was so excited to see it in all of its glory. All of that history, that beauty, just gone up in flames.

All the glass windows, all of then gone ... they were from the 13th century
The organ, with more than 8.000 pipes, melted ...

What was called "the forest", made with oak cut in the 12th century, gone.

    I am heartbroken.

Firemen are now reporting that it is unsure whether or not they'll be able to save anything at all .... I just cant imagine Paris without Notre Dame

I just read an interesting thread on Twitter, the cathedral was in horrible shape due to neglect and a fight over who should repair it. This tragedy was waiting to happen. History lost.

A good thread from a former firefighter on what the crews are facing in trying to fight the fire.

My heart just aches over this. Art, architecture, history, all gone.

Seeing Trump's tweet made me all stabby. Just STFU.

Sorry, Tiny Pixy. What a loss of a truly amazing building.

I totally agree, Obama's statement is so much classier.

latest update is that the structure of the building is ok and has been saved. which basically means that's all that's left

    I just cried so hard

According to AFP (French Press Association), the structure is safe, one fireman is grevely injured, and they're still fighting the flames
