I see nothing wrong with here with these carols. Poking fun at yourself is one of the best ways to deal with what your're coping with-whether it's mental illness or just a stressful day. What the PC zealots don't seem to understand is that now the people who made these carols probably feel like they done something wrong and will get more stress from now-and that's not what someone in that state of mind needs.

Stupid PC police.

Some thoughts:

This article comes from the Daily Mail, the right-wing British alarmist mouthpiece which is basically a polemic for hire against anything to the left of radical right-wing. The source of this article itself guarantees that there are facts missing or glossed over in their mad rush to smear anyone or any belief system that is not radically right wing.

I think the dangers of political correctness are vastly exaggerated. The radical right has an agenda here : to convince its base that they are a persecuted minority and if this poor victimized persecuted minority doesn't get off its ass and DO SOMETHING, then the evil Thought Police is going to be bashing doors down and taking away their freedom of speech. Reality proves otherwise.

Also, in howling from the rooftops about the evils of liberal censorship, the right has turned itself into a very effective censoring machine against the left and the center.

Finally, yes there was somewhat of an overreaction on the part of the council. What exactly does it prove? Councils overreact and underreact all the time. What makes this one obscure council somewhere in Europe, thousands of miles away, so special? Some random council somewhere puts out some magazine that had some jokes in it. Some one read the jokes and got pissed. The council got worried and pulled the magazine. So?

But the above description doesn't make one's blood boil the way it would if I said OMG!!!! Stupid PC Police are SCREWING us AGAIN!!! They're taking away our FREEDOM...STOP THEM NOW!!! Otherwise, WE"RE ALL FUCKED FOREVER!!!! like the Daily Mail does.

Phone Menu at the Mental Health Institute

Hello, and thank you for calling the Mental Health Institute

If you are obsessive-compulsive, press 1 repeatedly

If you have multiple personalities, press 2, 3 and 4.

If you suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, press 5 but do it v-e-r-y- s-l-o-w-l-y and carefully.

If you are dyslexic, press 6. Now press 9. Now press 6. Now press 9. Now press 6.

If you are delusional, press 7 and your call will be transferred to the mothership.

If you have short term memory loss, press 8. If you have short term memory loss, press 8. If you have short term memory loss, press 8.

If you have schizophrenia, listen very carefully and a small voice will tell you the number to press.

If you have a nervous disorder, fidget with the hash key until a representative comes on the line.

If you are co-dependent, ask someone to press a number for you.

If you are depressed, don't bother to press any numbers. No one will be able to help you anyway.

If you are paranoid, you don't need to press anything. We know who you are, we know what you want, and we know how to reach you.

If you suffer from low self-esteem, please hang up because all our operators are too busy to talk to you.

Hahahaha! This is AWESOME! I agree that some people need to lighten up too!

I'm amazed at her insensitivity, does she not realise that people suffering from mental afflictions LIKE to laugh and actually have a sense of humour? They have health issues, they're not stupid.
EXACTLY! Totally agree.

good post, Elyse. I can see your point. I don't think 'political correctness' was ever as big of a deal as most people made it out - it seems to me there are hypersensitive people who sue and complain about everything and then there are people who care about using tolerant and supportive language. Totally different agendas.

As long as they didn't go out of their way to hurt anyone, I don't see what the big deal is. People use humor and make jokes to lighten the severity of a situation. It's getting to the point where we can't even open our mouths without being ostracized for it.
