She didnt destroy mining or any of the other inefficient and unprofitable nationalised industries: the unions did that. Flame away, Im made of Teflon like her.

Im not surprised by the hatred and bitterness now on display but she decisively won 3 consecutive elections and was PM for 11 years so obviously plenty of people did like her and what she stood for.

I did wonder that one woman, even a powerful one, could cause so much devastation alone.

I see what you're saying, but what I personally was referring to was my memories growing up as a kid. I do remember plenty of American people liking her, for whatever reason. Some of them might have just supported her actions, but I think a lot of them were willfully ignorant, or apathetic or whatever you want to call it. It's kind of like people picking and choosing what they like about politicians now. Ideally, everyone should be more aware and compassionate, but it doesn't happen often. And again, I'm talking about memories, not so much hard proven historical fact. And honestly, I don't really remember her being painted as a vile witch in the mainstream media.

I always found it interesting and ironic, that in my experience, Americans were more likely to like her when so many people in England despised her, and that is really the only thing I was trying to say.

I do remember British musicians complaining about her, but as a kid, I would have no way of putting that into context since I didn't live in England. Hearing stuff like "Fuck Thatcher" (or whatever) doesn't really tell much of a story.

She privatised most of the major basketcase nationalised industries (telecoms, airline, gas, electric, railways, mining, etc) so a huge number of people became shareholders for the first time, surely a principle held dear by most Americans? She also sold public housing tenants their homes making them homeowners for the first time which was hugely popular.

And that's a good point, that certainly would have spoken loudly and positively to many Americans.

Oh aye she was a stand up lady, what with the opposition to devolution, the poll tax, the closure of industry, removal of free milk from schools (when many families were so poor that it was some of the only calcium they had), the falklands conflict, the massive increase in unemployment, the killing off of trade unions, the invention of the QUANGO, two recessions, her stating that she agreed with the "If a man will not work he shall not eat" sentiment, her making it even more difficult for the poor to attain further and higher education, her branding Nelson Mandela a terrorist, the widening of the gap between rich and poor, the way she dealt with the issues in Northern Ireland, her backing of Pol Pot and Augusto Pinochet... the list goes on and on.

Also interesting to note that her right-on socialist New Labour successor, Tony Blair, didnt repeal ANY of her evil capitalist legislation. People still own their shares and their homes and the unions are still firmly back in their box.

It's funny, all the ranting firebrand old school hardcore socialist union leaders in Oz are obviously escapees from the Thatcher regime because nobody cared or listened to them any more in the UK. And they are mostly Scottish [runs away].

Come on, a*o, I can maybe see agreeing with her from an economic standpoint but calling Mandela a terrorist, basically supporting apartheid and being chummy with pol pot and Pinochet?

Im playing devil's advocate a bit and yes, she had some very dodgy "friends" but she was still a remarkable woman and leader. As she famously said "In politics, if you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman".

To me, she's a feminist icon who rose through the male dominated political dog eat dog ranks to the top job on her brains, determination and convictions whether we agree with them or not. It's even more remarkable when you consider it happened over 30 years ago. She grew up in a very modest home, went to Oxford university to study chemistry, graduated and went to work as an industrial chemist, got married, decided to become a tax barrister, had twins while taking her final Bar exams, all the while trying and eventually succeeding to enter Parliament as a young female MP.
