Now CNN is reporting that the plane was hundreds of miles off course and heading in the opposite direction.

Wouldn't some passengers start calling out, telling relatives something bad was happening?
There is one theory that if the oxygen/air system failed the crew and passengers could have been dead in seconds, according to a pilot they interviewed here. Like that golfers plane here.

thats definitely what they were doing. I am know manyyy iranians who have come to Europe to seek asylum and majority of them go through Thailand as its very easy to get hold of stolen passports and get through the borders. I'm guessing now it won't be as easy.

This is an interesting sounding theory, IMO. I know nothing about planes though so I don't know if the info is correct. Long article so I will just post the link.

So many theories and contradictory stories coming from the authorities the media here is speculating whether the Malaysians know more about this but don't want to admit it as it would mean losing face, a big deal in that culture, if it involves slack airport security.

Gawd, I'd hate to think anyone is hiding something to "save face". The cost is way too great and the stakes too high here. I wouldn't be surprised if there are facts that haven't been disclosed yet.

Can't think of anything to debunk that theory. Sounds pretty solid, actually. We have to go to an altitude chamber every five years so we can always be aware of our hypoxia symptoms to hopefully prevent another Payne Stewart type crash from occurring again. They take you to 35,000 ft., make you drop your mask and stay off oxygen until you recognize at least three symptoms. The bad news is, about 3/4 of the people in every class have euphoria as one of the first symptoms. Obviously not good, as you aren't going to recognize something's wrong. The
physiological experts told us you're likely to act similarly to how you do buzzed or drunk. I just sat there giggling until I almost passed out, some got belligerent, while others could not name basic colors. We wouldn't have believed the instructors, but they film the whole thing. Long story short, people do odd things when they're hypoxic

Video of the above training. This wasn't my class, but this guy is shown every time as an example. Poor kid. When the instructors are shouting "gangload your regulator" they are just trying to get him to turn on his oxygen systems on his own accord.

The gradual decompression/hypoxia theory makes sense but surely these aircraft have alarms to detect low oxygen levels?

At this point, that makes as much sense as anything, WCG.
A*O, I fly a Boeing about the same age as the 777. If our cabin altitude rises above 12.500 we get an aural warning that does not shut off as well as 3 red lights. I can't imagine the 777 having anything less. Most healthy people should be nowhere near incapacitated at 12,000 feet, even for extended periods of time.

Wow that hypoxia training video is scary shit. Damn. They don't remember the shit they're doing while their brain is deprived of oxygen, huh? The guy was just replaying the last thing he remembers, like his body's on autopilot but he's not there.
