Sometimes when a phone is off it will ring several times before going to voicemail.

Thanks, Flygirl - it's nice to have someone with some experience here.

I would think SOMETHING (or someone) would have surfaced by now. Somewhere. And if it has, it's likely drifted a ways from where it went down. No fuel or oil slick anywhere else? I feel awful for their families.

I don't mean to post so much, but when something like this happens, it turns me into an obsessive nut. My "ground job" is an accident investigator, meaning they can send me to serve on an investigation board (military) anytime a plane goes down. It's really great training, but it's also emotionally starting to wear on me. Thirty days of listening to un-edited cockpit voice recorders, interviewing families, etc. and then they expect me to hop in the jet and go fly. It's gotten even tougher now that I have a family.

Could the plane have sunk intact, a la Airport 77?

Please carry on if you feel up to it. I like hearing from people who have knowledge on a subject.

Maybe that particular phone didn't make it onboard? I know if I shut off my phone and someone calls, it doesn't ring but goes straight to voicemail. I would assume the same to be true if it were submerged in water.

My teen son had this crazy theory that the plane has been intercepted by those involved in the issue between Ukraine & Russia.
(Forgive me, I don't really follow the news pretty much because I am so sick of all the negativity)
I looked at my son and suggested he get out more.
There's no base to his theory, right?! Please tell me no
Another theory is a Singaporean friend of mine saying it's the Bermuda triangle.
I don't even have to read the news and I get these crazy stuff.

My thoughts are with the family. I sure hope there is some good news or at least closure for them very soon.

especially since we lost our last aviation expert to this mysterious "real life" stuff I've heard so much about.

This is not always the case. I feel bad that gave them some hope.

Impossible at these speeds, I would've thought.

Yeah, that's a movies-only phenomenon. I've seen videos of planes crashing into the sea and just the wrong placement of a wing tip can rip the entire fuselage to shreds. Sully Sullivan said that he knew if he made one mistake when he landed on the Hudson that it would be absolute carnage.

This is the only example of a commercial airline flight having an unplanned crash in water with survivors according to Wikipedia, and even then you can see how it's coming in from a fairly shallow trajectory at a slightly reduced speed.
