I made you a picture so you don't have nightmares. Just because crabs and pearl necklaces somehow seem like they go together...badabing. Here is a coconut crab getting ready to eat a coconut with your silverware and wearing your jewelry and lipstick.

As hilarious as this whole thread was, this DID turn out to be the dig a friend of mine worked on and now all the evidence is in/analyzed.

I have now seen enough evidence from their findings to convince ME that this is where Amelia wound up, but there's still no 100% conclusive proof. Unfortunately none of the bone fragments had any DNA remaining, but they do keep finding more and more evidence with each expedition to that island, so there is hope this is a mystery that someday will be conclusively solved.

PS: If you see 'Finding Amelia' on the Discovery channel, my friend Meggie is in charge of DNA evidence

    A few things to note:
*They don't really think the crabs ate them to death, so much as scattered the bones once they were already dead or, yes, dying.
*A skeleton was found on the island in 1940. It was examined and, at the time, believed to be a male of polynesian origin. Though the skeleton was not preserved, its measurements
were and those measurements are congruent with those of a European-esque female of about 5'7, which would match Amelia perfectly
*They are finding the buttons, bone fragments, the cracked makeup mirror, rouge, and the knife which was standard issue on Amelia's type of plane in the same spot where the bones were found, along with evidence of fish and turtles cooked over a fire and eaten in cast away fashion (the fish and creatures being eaten not falling into any pattern of desirability, just the small type of fish/animals that come close to shore and are easy to catch...not the way Pacific Islanders or the coast guard having a picnic would fish/cook)
*There is no source of freshwater on the island, so the presence of a glass container that was meant to hold hand lotion and a container that once had Ponds cream in it were probably to catch water from rain. A bunch of huge clam shells were found empty side up, also in a way that other cast aways in the past have been known to catch water.
*Amelia WAS known to take a little makeup with her every where she went so she could 'meet the press'.
It is highly likely there was a white female 5'7 castaway on this island before 1940 but after 1935, when some of the items found were issued. Considering there weren't a lot of lost middle aged white women floating about the pacific, it makes sense that this was, indeed, Amelia.

    Very cool.

Plus, I was happy that the thread got resurrected so I got to see Happy Spider and January's bejewelled crab again!

I still can't see that she would have hauled makeup along.

I still can't see that she would have hauled makeup along.
She did, though. She was a bit of a presswhore and her flights got a lot of attention, so she cleaned up.

People forget that Amelia was a prototype for modern female celebs: she had her own clothes and luggage lines and did a ton of press and advertisements.

Amelia! I really hope nothing gruesome happened to her, though I guess dehydration would be a pretty nasty end. Just hope it wasn't those damn crabs! I have a soft spot for Amelia and always hoped she didn't suffer much.

I love that the pearl necklace makes the crab look like she's smiling. Happy crab!
