I find it amazing that none of the nurses or doctors stepped up and said fuck this, and let the family in. The hospital I worked at in Memphis, people would have gladly risked their jobs to do right by the patient because a situation as horrible and cruel as this would have been unthinkable to all the nurses I knew, regardless of their religion, etc. Maybe I just know some exceptional nurses. It can't be possible that they were unaware that this woman had family outside the door in the waiting room. Quite possibly that might be why the woman was moved to another area of the hospital, where that family wasn't. No nurse I know wouldn't have thought the hospital was out of line for this. I wonder what the gay nurses and staff working here thought about this?

WTF? When a loved one is dying, it deserves compassion not obstacles. I cannot believe would ever find this justified in any circumstances.

This makes me so angry, it's cruel and outrageous that the hospital allowed this to happen and even moreso that a judge ruled this was acceptable. How can this happen?? Don't they have any way to appeal, any way this can go federal? The Supreme Court needs to intervene, this is horrible and I don't understand how it was ruled legal.

This is horrible.. this is basically intruding upon the last moments someone has to spend with their family and loved ones and stripping them of that intrinsic human right. Their poor children having to witness that... the poor woman having to live with the knowledge that her life partner was basically denied any and all peace and comfort during her last moments of life. What fucking monsters. How does sexual preference even BEGIN to factor into this? Fucking horrible.. plain and simple, this is a fucking travesty.

So do they have any recourse now with this lawsuit? How could it just be thrown out?

I would think that they could appeal the dismissal of their suit, but this is Florida where the Courts let a woman wallow in a persistant vegitative state for years by putting the rights of parents above the rights of the spouse to act.

This story makes me ill.
Even with HIPAA regulations, someone on vacation with a friend would probably be allowed access to hold her hand. I am appalled that with all the legal documents put in place ahead of time that a hospital could just deny visitation to the family. That's wrong on all counts.

this is sickening. And I want to know how a judge can rule in favour of someone who blatantly disregarded a valid, legally binding POA document?!
To deny someone those final moments of comfort, or providing comfort, of closure, and the opportunity to say goodbye is abhorrent. And I can't believe this behaviour was excused.

I don't understand this at all. Some hospitals have rules stating only legally recognized family members can visit, but hospitals break those rules. Surely, her children would be legal family members requiring and adult guardian to visit, which would have enabled her partner to enter as well.

There is no worse nightmare than some self rightous prick, who loves inflicting misery on any poor soul at his mercy. Nice nurses usually break those rules. These idiots have probably chased off any decent nurse.

Having someone that sociopathic with lives in his hands is frightening. Gay, straight, bi, black, white, latino, whatever, at the end of the day there are two types of people, assholes and non-assholes. Every group has a mix of both and beyond a person's heart, does it fucking matter?
