My kids and I like so much of the same things, too. I think that is a healthy relationship. I got so much bullshit from my sister when I said I could see me and my older daughter going to a bar (when she is of age, of course ) and she just thougth that was so wrong. You couldn't go to a bar with your CHILD...I laugh with my kids, I cry with my kids. I am 19 years older than my oldest daughter...not that much has changed in 19 years. I still remember what is was like to be a teenager-the joys, the heartaches...I think parents that can do this will have a stronger relationship with their kids and when they need them, they will turn to the parents (hopefully) instead of someone else or trying to handle it on their own.
As far as music, I can remember my oldest "discovering" Pink Floyd!! She was just amazed! And my youngest asked me if I knew who Bob Segar was! It's so fun to watch them experience 'older' music knowing that they enjoy it as much today as we did then. That has to say a lot for the music, too....it spans the generations and has that same effect...

LOL, when I discovered Pink Floyd, my mom was worried I was turning to Satan. Same with all the cool music I discovered when I was about 13 or 14. My older brother and I had to listen to our cassettes in secret...

I think in some ways it is good to be in touch with your kids but not to the point where you are in a delayed adolescence process. Kids need adult parents, not big 'teens' to hang with (that is what their fellow teen friends are for).

I've seen too many parents who end up in this weird "friendship" relationship with the kids and it aint pretty sometimes.

There is nothing more pathetic than a 40 year old woman trying to look 18 or a 40 year old man acting like he is 16 again. eewww.

Ah, Pink Floyd. I remember when I turned my dad onto them. He was/is a real old school R&B guy who turned me on to Ray Charles and the blues, so it was fun to see him find something 'new' that he could get into. As far as the parents who try to be friends with their kids, I know what you all are saying. I'm friends in the sense that I am there for them to talk to, to lean on, to seek advice from, but first and foremost, I am their parent and they know there is a line not to cross. So we can enjoy things together but I'm still in charge and that's the way it has to be.
