And the planning? He had to have planned this out a long time before he put her there. Unbelievable! And the children? Never leaving that cramped existence for years and years. Their physical and mental health has to be horrible.

This story is so horrifying it can't be real, although I know it is. Those poor kids. How do they ever recover from this? Can you imagine never seeing the outside world, the sky, the sun, breathing the air? Even something like a tree would be foreign. Knowing that your father, who is also your grandfather (for the children), did this to you. And someone else mentioned what would have happened if he died? He was their only link to survival. Assuming the wife didn't know, they would have just starved slowly to death one by one.

I'm sure that there are other places where this kind of thing is going on. People said he seemed so nice and normal. They even had guests staying in the home upstairs. It makes you stop and think about people you think you know, who seem so normal. Who could be doing something like this? Or are there people near us hidden away, trapped, within our reach, but we don't know?

Based on the story and timeline at the end, it doesn't appear she did know. It's not totally clear, but it looks like he told her (as well as authorities) the children had been dropped off, presumably by their missing daughter. Then he brings the missing daughter and her children out of the basement and tells his wife she returned home after 24 years. It's all so bizarre.

It appears that the cellar was soundproofed- the detectives who have been there said that you could scream at the top of your lungs and not be heard.

Just awful, thse poor children.

I bet this gets made into a film.

Well one of the boys was 18. And the cellar only had a height of about 5'6. I'm pretty sure an 18 year old boy would be taller than that, so I would imagine he at least has to have back problems from stooping if nothing else

I imagine the 18-year-old would not have grown to his full height due to lack of nutrition, sunlight and exercise. And it appears the mother didn't know. The father made teh daughter write letters each time she had one of the three taken in saying 'she couldn't cope' and didn't want to be found. It's just such a sick, sick story and I am beyond disturbed.

You've got to figure, though, that if they bought the whole story about the daughter running away to join a cult in teh first place, it would seem plausible that she would drop any kids off and perhaps the authorities saw it as an easy answer to have the 'grandparents' raise the kids.
