as the story unfolded they say the children were not removed for the names, which I have no objection to.

But I have a real issue with the state removing any children for the parents' beliefs. I believe in the principle of freedom of thought and speech for all, and it's not conditional on if I find them or the ideas repugnant.

As regards mental abuse, I see parents doing things to children I think are mentally abusive, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. Parents teach children racism, anti-semitism, homophobia, sexism...who is the state to decide what parents teach their own children? I could never believe in giving the government an inch on that power.

All of God's children are not beautiful. Most of God's children are, in fact, barely presentable.

If kids can be removed from their parents for having jacked up names then most of the celebrities in Hollywood should have their kids taken away.

Good points but am still on the fence. Having a stupid name is different from having a name that is sure to incite some pretty bad reactions. When I lived in Sweden I thought it was nuts that the government retained the right to reject a name chosen by the parents but now I'm seeing some merit in that idea.

I saw this on CNN, and it was stated that the names led to investigations and then other forms of abuse or w/e was discovered and the children were removed for their own safety...

I agree with others in this thread, it is a form of child abuse...imagine in school the teasing and alienation they will feel, and as adults they would be discriminated against.

This case is sealed but I know people who work for DYFS. They have said that there were grounds for removal that had nothing to do with the names of the children. The son is not the only one with a Nazi name. They will have plenty of chances to regain custody as it works through the courts. I believe the kids are now with other family members through emergency approval as foster parents.

Anyone that discriminates against someone because of their name is just as big an idiot as the people who named this child.

I think the name Adolf Hitler is an exception to that.

^ I don't. It's not like the child named himself.

A name doesn't make a person anyway. Unless of course you're a Jade, then you are most certainly a whore.

I believe there have been scientific studies showing that everyone is prone to discriminate subconsciously on the basis of name. One study had teachers grade student papers of equal quality (or the same papers), and kids named things like Beulah and Ethel consistently got lower scores than kids named things like Lisa and David.

If I received a resume from someone calling himself Adolf Hitler something-or-other, I'd assume it was a joke. I guess he could leave out the Hitler part (I've known one American Adolf), but man. He'd be better off changing his name.

They were saying on CNN that the authorities wouldn't say why they removed them but they only remove children when they are in imminent danger.

I wouldn't doubt it, if the parents were physically abusive. Obviously they're just not all there.

    Have more details been released?

Maybe the parents were pumping their kids full of anti-semitic propaganda and shit like that.. emotional abuse, in a way.. but I'm willing to bet there was some kind of physical trauma involved too.. otherwise the parents could sue the shit out of the arresting agency.

Well, whatever it was, this article states that they couldn't have removed the kids based solely on names alone. Something's gone on, and no one's talking.
