Just as flying used to be a "luxury", so did cruising. Ships were indeed much better built and maintained and the whole experience was pitched at a certain demographic who could afford it. Now we have cheap, budget air travel and mass market cruises too. But they are still marketed as an upmarket, glamorous idyll with sophisticated food, entertainment and fellow passengers. Yeah, right.

I don't want anyone to get hurt or suffer any more than they already have, but I wouldn't blame those passengers for rioting after all of this. Ridiculous to send people 2.5 hours out of the way to a hotel after this ordeal. It may have been a cheap cruise, but I can't imagine all those people saving up for a few days of sun and sea and getting this in return.

And I completely agree - they do not make anything that is meant to last anymore whether it be ships or TVs. It used to be that you made an investment in your money and you got something of worth for it.

I'm not bagging cheap cruises, I'm pointing out the economics of being able to offer them at such low prices while being required to do important, regular, expensive maintenance. It cant be done.

Especially when it's unnecessary. Even if Carnival refused to put these people up in Mobile (which most certainly does have many motels and hotels who could accomodate), Biloxi is less than an hour away from Mobile and could also handle any overflow - or the whole lot, as they have several huge casino hotels. They're going out of their way to make these poor people even more miserable with a late night bus ride all the way to New Orleans.

And remember one of the best things about a cruise was the food? Not anymore, especially with Carnival. The food that you pay for with your cruise has majorly decreased in quality. That's why there is a proliferation of "alternative" restaurants. The food served in them is delicious, and a higher quality than in the main dining rooms or on the pool decks - but you have to pay for the privilege. A dinner for two in one of Carnival's steakhouses will cost you upwards of $150 - including wine and desserts.

On my Carnival cruise they laid out bologna and processed cheese slices in the dining room for embarking passengers. The dining room food was decent, but hardly memorable. The prime rib was great, but oh, what a line there was for that. Burgers, franks, all of school cafeteria grade. And most of the cruise ship food seems to be that way, unless you are paying big bucks for Seabourn or Silversea, and people even complain about them.

I knew you weren't, we kind of posted at the same time and I agree. I just mean I totally understand that you get what you pay for, but no one deserves this. You can understand, OK people aren't going to get the luxurious, upscale stuff like caviar and Cristal, but basic maintenance is a must no matter what. And so are basic sanitary conditions.

A friend and his wife recently went on a cruise and he paid a fortune up front and was nickel and dimed to pieces on meals and even bottled water. I don't know what cruise line it was, or what kind of deal he got, but it sounded miserable. Not as miserable as this, but they were an engine fire away from this happening to them I imagine.

It's just unbelievable. I would be beyond thankful and happy for terra firma in Mobile or Biloxi, as I'm sure these passengers would be as well. A two hour drive to New Orleans is practically a vacation in and of itself and I'm sure these people don't want that. You'd think the gas needed for the buses alone would be cost prohibitive to having everyone stay in Alabama.

The boat just docked a few minutes ago. Now they get to look forward to a 4 or 5 hours fun-filled disembarkment.

Still haven't heard from my friends, but our TV interview a school principal 7 she had a room with a balcony, so had a much easier time. I felt better,I know my friend would have had a balcony. They would be madder at being away from a golf course that long.
Most of the people from here just want home, no hotel anywhere. Several are driving straight through the night.

I'm watching CNN Live and they're interviewing the people coming off the ship. It's nice to see people come off the boat smiling even through all that. I've also heard more than one person say that the crew was very kind and took care of everyone, even if Carnival itself was negligent.

The reporter also said that they can smell the boat even from afar, which I was also wondering about. I figured you could smell it miles off, but I wasn't sure.

If the travel to NO isn't going to be bad enough they are going to need new clothes when they get there too because I'll bet that everything they have with them will be completely saturated in stink.

Yeah, after that "vacation", I'd be glad to go to New Orleans. But I am a native so... And damn, those Alabama folks are really taking this as a slap in the face to THEM, ain't they? Sounds like some lingering bitterness between Mobile and Carnival.
Oh well, at least these folks are off that damn filthy boat now!

I finally heard from my friends! They are NOT on this-they are on the Crown Princess and are having a great time. They dock tomorrow, all nice and normal.
