Shinola, I'm so, so, sorry to hear about what happened to you - I hope that the guy who did this too you burns in hell for it and never knows a moments true happiness on this earth.
I also think Crumpet has a good point - more men need to start standing up and saying "This shit ain't right!" and stop going along with the gang mentality. And I think that young men and boys need to have it instilled in them from a young age that this is not acceptable and that it is a braver and better man who will stand up and go against the group than be a sheep.

Thanks, Kittylady. I think the guy who raped me didn't necessarily mean harm, but he was ignorant and inexperienced. His later deranged letters made it clear that he thought he was in love with me and didn't really understand what he'd done, or at least that was how he was processing things so that he could rationalize them. So I agree that men need to be better educated about rape; I think that could be extremely helpful.

Shinola i'm sorry for ya too.
i usually dont tell my deep dark secrets, but there is a reason i was so pissed about the comment about why she didnt scream. (i've debated even telling this, but i'm not ashamed that it happened, just sometimes, other peoples reactions worry me)
in 1980, i was 6 mo pregnant, and went for my morning walk on the beach. I went into the public restroom to do my business. There was no door on the stall, but i was pregnant, so well, you know how pregnant women are. I heard someone come in, and next thing i know, there was a guy there. Long story short, he beat me, punched me, held a broken off Heineken bottle to my neck, threatened me with the Mexican Mafia if i made a peep. Now i have a BIG mouth, you'd think, why didnt she scream? because i didnt want to get my throat slit.
my first thought was of the baby. After it was all said and done, a friend took me to the hospital, and we saw him sitting at a bus stop on the way there. We called the police, they got him. i testified in the trial, he got 14 years. he died in prison (diabetes). as for me? i lost the baby 13 days later.
looking back, should i have screamed? maybe. I will tell you this, i REFUSE to let people judge me for a decision i made to keep myself alive.
side note: This guy was in the middle of being interviewed for a segment on 60 minutes, on career criminals that get out of prison and try to move on with their lives. So, i contacted 60 min, and met up with Mike Wallace to give my side of the story. The story came out good, made the rapist look like the monster that he was.

Shinola and msdeb - I am so sorry for what you've each been through. My heart breaks for you and the countless others who are out there with similar stories. You would be surprised at how many there are.

msdeb, I'm sorry--your story will make me cry if I think about it too long. Re. screaming, you made the decision you felt was best, and who would know better than you? I wonder if the guy targeted you just because you were pregnant? I know how vulnerable I was at 6 months along, and I doubt I would've screamed, either, with a bottle at my neck.
Good for you for finding the guy, testifying, and speaking up when he was interviewed for TV.
Mel and Quazar, you're right. That's why I posted--not because I need sympathy, but because I think rapes of all kinds are common, and it's unfortunate that it's so taboo to discuss it. Facts are facts--it happens to so many of us.

Its true when they say 'God doesn't give you more than you can handle'.
i'm a tough broad, but at the time, i did not feel like a rape victims advocate. Especially when there are people out there that say 'Why didnt you scream'. tsk tsk.
Its been almost 30 yrs, and to this day, i dont go into a public restroom alone. but, the good that came out of it? i'm aware of my surroundings, and i'm much stronger than i was back then.

i second that and also hope that there is a dark horrid place in hell for rapists.
my whole heart goes out to her, i cant even begin to imagine...
the fact that she was leaving the dance alone and going to meet her father makes me that she was a more subjugated part of the school population, like in the lower classes of social circles you know what i mean? like she wasn't exactly popular or had many friends maybe...and then drinking to probably "fit in" sort of situation, like this attack was probably a little bit planned as she left the dance, like "hey there's an easy target (a "nobody" at the school), lets offer her some booze", i mean no matter her social-class in school its horrible but if its like a more solitude type student, it makes me that much more sad

My heart breaks over these stories. You all are so brave for telling your stories, thank you. All of my love is being sent to you today.
I've always thought that rapists deserve the same penalty as murderers. Scum of the earth.

Luckily I've never been a victim, but I know way too many females who have.

Five arrested in alleged rape of girl at California high school
Nineteen-year-old Manuel Ortega is expected to be arraigned Wednesday.
Richmond, California (CNN) -- Police investigating the rape of a 15-year-old girl have arrested five people, a police spokesman said Wednesday.
Three juveniles and two adults are in custody in connection with the rape Saturday, said the Richmond police spokesman, Lt. Mark Gagan.
Authorities have described the incident as a 2½-hour assault on the Richmond High School campus.
Gagan said police arrested three of the suspects Tuesday night. They included Salvador Rodriguez, 21, as well as a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old whose identities were not released because they are juveniles, he said.
Rodriguez faces numerous felony charges, including gang rape, he said. It was not immediately clear what charges the other two face.
A 19-year-old, Manuel Ortega, and an unidentified 15-year-old were arrested earlier, he said. They are expected to be arraigned Wednesday, and the others are expected to be arraigned later this week.
Gagan said the suspects are likely to face "several felonies" in connection with the incident.
Earlier this week, police said Ortega -- who has been described as a former student at the school -- faced charges of rape, robbery and kidnapping, while the 15-year-old faced one felony count of sexual assault.
Gagan said Wednesday that police expect to make further arrests.
As many as 10 people were involved in the assault in a dimly lighted back alley at the school, police have said, while another 10 people watched without calling 911 to report it.
A 1999 California law makes it illegal not to report a witnessed crime against a child, but the law applies only to cases in which the child is 14 or younger.
Police have posted a $20,000 reward for anyone who comes to them with information that helps arrest and convict those involved in the attack.
"We do not have the ability to arrest people who witnessed the crime and did nothing," Gagan said. "The law can be very rigid. We don't have the authority to make an arrest."
The school said it would hold a safety meeting for parents and students Wednesday evening to address the alleged assault.
The attack occurred on school grounds as the annual homecoming dance was under way inside the school Saturday night, authorities said.
The victim was found unconscious and "brutally assaulted" under a bench shortly before midnight Saturday, after police received a call from someone in the area who had overheard people at the assault scene talking about the incident, police said.
The girl was flown by helicopter to a hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition. She was in stable condition Tuesday, police said. Investigators canvassed the community with fliers, which included the reward offer, hoping to identify more suspects.
Richmond is north of Oakland on San Francisco Bay.

ugh California
I swear the state of California is f*cked up. I live 30 minutes away from that, and some girl in the apartment complex I live in was found in the common room on the couch passed out with her pants off, just laying there.
I came home at the time the police found her, and they were asking questions on anything that they saw.
My roommate on the other hand laughed about it and was all "ohhh I saw her, but I just thought it was some weird drunk chick! tee hee" sort of crap, which is a good indication on people's moods.
Seriously you see some drunk chick with her pants off, or skirt pulled up just laying there, wake her up, and if she doesn't wake up call the cops. No one falls asleep like that naturally, by themselves.
Or once when I was walking home with a boyfriend, I saw these two men carrying a passed out drunk chick from a truck. I was alarmed and wanted to make sure everything was alright, but the boyfriend I was with had been all about not wanting any trouble and pleaded with me to just not say anything.
This sort of shit makes me so mad.
