So, what's the mood of the nation in the US? Does ANYONE think this was real? They'll be whoring themselves out to Oprah next saying they arranged the hoax because of PTSD or post natal depression or some other bullshit. I just cannot understand why people are so desperate for "fame" they'd do something this dumb.

I'm not sure -- I hope no one is buying it. I did see that the law enforcement officials were saying they believed it was real, but they are going to be interviewing the family again on Saturday. If it's not real, they will find some inconsistencies soon.
I still don't get who/why they were shooting footage of the balloon when it "accidently" became untethered.
It's so disturbing to me that they would do this and then drag their kids on every TV outlet to talk about it. Reality TV, YouTube -- it has made everyone think they deserve their 15 minutes.

The "father" is a total mental case. I wouldn't be surprised if he

^ Agreed. I recall when he was on WS, he said something to the "new mom" about how he was "so glad his wife was born/raised in Japan and KNEW how to act..."
... basically, being his damn servant. And both him and his wife never seemed to TALK. they just screamed stuff.

And who was filming it? Both crazy dad and loony mom appeared in the video...was one of their sons filming? Camera set up on a tripod? To what end? They were 'routinely' working on the balloon (and define working)?

I think it was the oldest son who was doing the filming.
The county sheriff said that they called CPS in to investigate after they've all been interviewed. They weren't negligent parents though like I originally thought, since they knew where that kid was the whole time. (Of course they're horrible parents for involving the kids in his crazy scheme. I mean like putting them in physical danger.) I don't know if the father being a crazy scammer is enough for them to get involved though.

Why is the media still giving publicity to this story? It's exactly what the family wants. I'm not even sure there is a story here to justify press conferences and news exploits by the family. The cops are stupid to believe this wasn't a hoax and the public is right to be pissed.

I think I read (today) that the real losers in this is the family farm where the balloon landed. Apparently it's a wheat field that only grows every 2 years and because of all the rescue vehicles that raced across it, they will lose an entire growing cycle.
Ok, it was TMZ, but aren't they the end all in news these days?

I read at TMZ that the dad came out at 5Am this morning to say he was making a big announcement. Then he came back out at 10AM with a cardboard box saying that since he doesn't have cable, he didn't know what people were saying about the incident. He wants people to leave their suggestions in the box.
The media needs to stop reporting on this famewhore.
