I've loved giraffes since I was little kid and seeing this on my face book feed made me want to cry .

I don't care what the zoo's "logic" was, this breaks my heart. Then the had zoo visitors watch them carve it up? Seriously, folks?

The miracle of death. Kiddies have to learn some time.

Oh, that's a whole other discussion Twitchy.
I can't say I agree with the public autopsy/direction but I remember frogs from biology....

Typically emotive reporting (being devoured by lions is a nice touch ) with cute animal pics. Yes, it's very sad but (a) the animal was a genetic risk and (b) therefore should not have been bred in the first place and for that I DO blame the zoo.

I don't know much about giraffes but if they didn't want him to breed, why couldn't they just have castrated him? If castration was possible it sure beats killing him and making him the lions dinner.

My guess is that they were breeding to get females, as they like in a hareem, 1 male to X females & that would have been ok? I guess? *shrug*.... I really am guessing here since the breeding program is very closely monitored.

Te answer is in the wall o' text I posted earlier.....

Here it is again to make it easier
"Q: Weren’t contraceptives or castration viable options?
A: Yes and no. Until recently, either would have required sedation, which is a relatively high-risk operation with giraffes. They are liable to break their necks when they fall while sedated. In the past several years, a contraceptive has been developed that can be injected into females from a distance."

Not as high risk as being shot with a bolt gun, I'd imagine.

Well, it depends what result you want. I don't think that they have paraplegic giraffes......

I can't bring myself to read this. I read a few posts & just can't bear it. I want to throw up just from the headline. My heart hurts.

Yeah, I can't work up any outrage here. Lions eat giraffes in the wild. All the big cats eat meat in the zoos. I'm not sure where people think the meat comes from. If they didn't use the giraffe some other animal would have been killed to feed the lions.

Ponies. They're buying up all the fat little ponies that daddy can't afford to pay for now he's bust & feeding them to the lions & tigers.
