The smaller they are, the more terrified I am that I'll break it when the parents hand the baby over for me to hold. The less fragile the better - I can then appreciate the cuteness, instead of thinking "Oh crap, what if I'm squishing it? What if I drop it? Am I holding it right?"
Also, OUCH!

as i said, my son was 11 lbs at birth. he was the biggest child in the nursery. and as mean as it sounds, he was THE ugliest baby i'd ever seen. it doesnt mean i loved him any less, he was just HUGE and looked like a red sumo wrestler.

HEY! I was 3 months preemie... watch it!
All babies are entitled to love and care.. regardless of how they look.. appraising their worthiness of care--professional care-- on the basis of ease of feeding or "cuteness" really offends me...

Y'all need to lighten up. Who said anything about a goal to have a smaller, premature baby? I said the smaller ones are usually cuter. That's it. I never said they were healthier or that it's preferable to give birth to one. And I never said that smaller ones are more worthy of care!! Do you actually think the bigger babies get substandard care because they're generally deemed less cute? (sorry, but they are). Some babies are just cuter than others, and yes, your nurses and doctors do notice these things too. They all receive the proper level of care, regardless. If you think the nurses in the hospital don't notice and comment on the cuter babies, you're delusional. Doesn't mean we stick the chunkers in the corner and ignore them while fawning over the smaller ones. We take care of thousands of babies a year, and while your little Cody might be the apple of your eye, he most likely just looks like any other baby to us. Also, for the record, 3-4 lb babies generally look completely normal and grow up to be just fine, they just need to feed and grow in the hospital for a little while before they go home. It's the extremely low birth weight kids that tend to have the long term health problems. I think I know a thing or two about premature infants, but thanks for the lesson.

Now Diva I think we all know that's not the case. Brand-new babies quite often look like grumpy old men, regardless of size, due to their crinkled up skin, lack of teeth, red faces and tendency to be moany and annoying can you tell I don't like babies?!

i don't know why people thought your post was insensitive or where you implied you weren't providing the giant babies with proper care. LOL and certainly wasn't 'pro-ana'
just frank and honest about what babies look like. some are ugly, some are cute, some are like tiny bald scrawny little rats, etc... i don't know why it's considered taboo to say these things. people need to lighten up.

Well if you can't see why calling a human that isn't entirely formed yet more attractive and appealing than a human who is completely and healthfully formed as being kin to being pro ana, then perhaps you are better off.

Pro ana? That's a bit of a stretch, dontcha think?
I'm confused, who's not completely formed? I think people have a misconception about premature babies. They're not all extreme cases hooked up on ventilators and wrapped in plastic. I don't even work with those kind. Mostly because they're simply not attractive enough for me

Premie means premature...as in not yet mature. They may not all be extreme cases, but many of them are; a baby being born premature skyrockets their chances of having health problems, thus I'm not down with a blanket statement about their surperior attractiveness
Still, I don't question your right to say it. This is a board of opinions, which are, as the saying goes, like assholes. Everybody has one and they all stink

I think everyone should aim to have a preemie. They are small and cute and don't rip your hoohah to shreds when you pop them out. No wait, you keep your hoohah nice by having a C section. I think that's how it works.
