mccarthy is known for his pieces that are meant to provoke reflection on the art world. the inflatable turds are called 'complex shit'. he also has a great sense of humour. sometimes art is meant to be funny and thought-provoking but people don't get it because they think art is supposed to be all serious and shit (no pun intended).
of course it's art but i don't think we're going to agree on this because you seem to have a more narrow interpretation of what constitutes 'art'.
art doesn't have to be pretty, it doesn't have to be decorative, practical, serious or even particularly mature. some of my favourite contemporary artists have the sense of humour of a 12 year-old boy and that's part of why i love them.
