It's probably slipped under the Rest Of The World radar, but we've been experiencing some large and devastating bushfires around here over the last couple of weeks. It's part and parcel of an Aussie summer, but the fires have caused a huge amount of livestock and property loss (and 2-3 human lives). The firefighters are mostly volunteers for the CFA (Country Fire Authority) and they are bloody heros IMO. Anyway, one fire has been keeping them busy for many exhausting days but things are now under control thanks to some welcome rain and the local communities are beginning to pick up the pieces and count the cost. The small township of Ararat has been blessed with the arrival of a slick group of 'counsellors' who are offering free post traumatic stress counselling and other assistance to local people who may be in need of some psychological support. Guess who these 'angels of mercy' really are? Of course! It's the Scientologists on a recruitment drive. Fucking vultures. Grrrrrrrrr.

I wonder what the per capita income for that Ararat township is...would not be surprised if this figured in somehow...is it a poorer area or a wealthier one?

Dunno - but I recall they moved in during the Katrina disaster in New Orleans so perhaps they are casting their net wider than Hollywood celebs these days.

I had heard about the wild fires on The Weather Channel yesterday. My husband asked me if you were in the path of these fires. Ive talked about you and others but not anything personal. He is a huge weather fan.

The fires were in rural areas around the state (Victoria). Thanks for your concern but I live in the 'burbs so we are fine. If you want some scary Aussie bushfire info Google the fires that happened on the infamous Ash Wednesday in 1986(??). People had to stand in the surf on the beaches with wet towels over their heads while hot ash and embers rained down. Lot of people died in that terrible fire. Australia can be a very harsh and cruel place to be sometimes.
