Whoever's dumping placentas in the sewer system needs to stop
Placentas Found In Sewage System
URBANA, Ill. (AP) - Someone is disposing of placentas in the sewage system and authorities in central Illinois just want it to stop. Workers in Urbana-Champaign found a placenta Thursday in a filter that keeps large objects out of the sewage treatment plant.
It was the third found this year. Officials said it's never happened before. They wonder if a midwife or veterinarian is avoiding the expense of medical waste disposal.
The placenta is an organ that joins mother and fetus and is expelled during birth.
They are potentially infectious, although health officials said the risk to the public is low. State regulations prohibit disposal in sewage systems.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said he's not entirely sure whether the placentas are human or animal. More testing is under way.

That is just disgusting. I remember my placenta.... I saw the nurse put it in a giant zip lock bag. Freshness guaranteed!

Ewww.
My doctor shocked the hell out of me with mine...popped up right next to my face, "WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THE PLACENTA!?" Hell no, and I don't want to see my bladder catheter bag, either.

I wonder what they do with placentas? I would guess most parents don't want it. Medical waste?

What do dr.s expect people to do with the placenta? I assume that some patients do want it or else they wouldn't ask? Genuinely curious here.

I thought the hospitals gave/sold placentas to cosmetic companies for face creams, etc?
I know a few people who buried their kids' placentas in the garden and planted a special tree there to commemorate the birth.
And I know that some people think it's very cosmic to eat their child's placenta. Sautee'd with a nice glass of chianti.

^^Nasty!
Is this where stem cells are culled from? I thought that was from umbilical cords, attached but not quite the same thing as the placenta.
