Default Maternity wards to widen delivery-room doors for obese mothers

Maternity units have been forced to widen delivery-room doorways because of the increasing numbers of obese mothers.
Leading hospitals across the country have revealed they have had to expand frames by up to four inches to cope with overweight women.
Thirty out of 33 birthing centres in London have confirmed that the dimensions of their doorways have increased.

Hospitals across the country have revealed they have had to expand frames by up to four inches to cope with overweight women
While rising obesity is a concern in the general population, it is a particular problem for pregnant women because of the health risks to them and their unborn children.
Doctors say up to 50 per cent of women giving birth in some areas of the UK are now classed as obese, with the highest figures in Liverpool, Glasgow and London.
The news was revealed at a conference at the British Library last week held by Government-funded research body the Confidential Enquiry Into Maternal And Child Health (CEMACH).
Jo Modder, CEMACH’s clinical director of obstetrics and consultant obstetrician at University College of London Hospital, said she had witnessed instances where maternity staff could not fit women through delivery-room doors.
She said: ‘It’s not by much, only a couple of inches. But it causes problems and it’s not very dignified for patients.’
Hospitals have admitted spending £50million on equipment to deal with overweight patients, including £21million on stronger beds.
The CEMACH study found two-thirds of maternity units in London had bought new beds. Most could deal with weights of up to 250kg (40 stone), but one birthing centre reported that it had ordered a bed that had a safe working load of up to 300kg (47 stone).
It now appears that hospitals have also had to pay for structural changes. Siobhan Quenby, consultant obstetrician at Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, said the hospital had been designed with wider beds in mind but that some brands of bed for larger patients still did not fit.
‘The hospital had to find a company that made delivery beds for larger women which would fit through our doors, even after the architect had widened them,’ she said. ‘I think the doors were widened by something in the region of around two to four inches.’

The North West London Hospitals NHS Trust said the size of delivery rooms had increased in a refurbishment three years ago and while this was not done ‘specifically’ for larger mothers, it allowed all women ‘more space’.
Many hospitals were reluctant to talk about problems posed by obesity. Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals NHS Trust said it was not prepared to give out information ‘because of patients’ sensitivities’.
Pregnant women are classed as obese by CEMACH if they have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of greater than 35 or weigh more than 100kg (15 stone) during their pregnancy. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by his or her height (in metres) squared and is thought to be the most useful way to assess body-fat levels.
Studies have found that being overweight can increase a mother’s risk of diabetes, heart problems and maternal death. It also makes women more likely to miscarry.
Many hospitals are now considering specialist obesity clinics for pregnant women.
The Department of Health said it did not provide guidance to NHS trusts on widening doorways for obese patients.

This is ridiculous. Fat is like an epidemic.

I have personally known two very large women who mated and reproduced. It happens. And in both cases, there were major complications.

So basically by structurally changing the hospital buildings and ordering special equipment they are encouraging women who are overweight and pregnant. What about the healthy tax payers who are paying for this shit? I guess these women are too dumb or selfish to realize that being obese can HARM YOUR UNBORN BABY. What the hell are these people doing?

So there are no obese taxpayers in the world at all? So we all are fat and on the state?? I gotcha!! So when I do my taxes, should I use my weight instead of my income for this year!?! I'm neither dumb nor selfish, you should ask that same question of junkies, cancer patients, women with hiv who get pregnant every damn day. I have several friends who were fat when they got pregnant, and gave birth... their kids were and are still healthy..
You know what they are doing, they are living their lives and not giving a fuck who don't like it. I say if they can support themselves, a baby, and take care of both without help from the state..then we all should mind our damn business!!

Me too. That shit is in everything. I read the average American consumes 70 pounds of that crap every single year.

Studies have shown that it does indeed increase the likelihood of obesity, makes the body produce higher numbers of triglycerides, and suggests that it suppresses the body's ability to feel full, among other things.

come on, surely you can see how obesity is a health epidemic? there have always been junki8es and cancer patients but there have never been as many obese people as there are now and it is a real health threat. i mean, why is it that for hundreds of years we have been able to live with doors that were a certain width but now we have to start widening doors in hospitals? that's not normal! people are not meant to weigh that many hundreds of pounds.

Could you imagine having to do a C section on a woman who weighed 200 kg??? You know there is a problem when you have to be weighed at the shipping department of the hospital and not the doc's office.

How are people who are people being extremely huge a health threat to people other than themselves. They aren't out there infecting people with their fat disease, they are doing this to themselves. There have always been fat people, but they were usually hiding out in the house, convents, maids etc...
I can't speak for other folks, and I dare not to, I can only speak for myself, and about my weight. I fit in regular size shit. I don't need two seats when I fly, a seat belt extender when I drive, nor specially made furniture..none of that...but because I'm not what is considered 'normal size' it's an issue. I ordered a XXXX-L hospital bed for a client of mine this summer, I didn't know they came that large. I am not saying that being that large is right or of, I just want to know what business is it of anyone else who it isn't directly affecting?

I totally agree. I'm so sick of the fat hate that goes on,and the lets blame the world's problems on the fat people shit that is constantly being spewed. Fat people are not the only people who cost taxpayers money. What about druggies, smokers, breeders, drunks etc...? It's fine to be any one of those as long as you're not fat,I guess. Ridiculous bullshit.
