It's not all scaremongering. It can happen. One of the teachers at my high school and one of my college professors were both killed that way.

My brother's car caught fire on the interstate. He had a lawn mower in the folded down backseat. He figured that when he picked it up from the person he'd loaned it to, that the engine was still hot, so somehow it ignited the gas in it. I don't know how he pulled over in time, but his car and everything in it was a loss.

This is a no-fault state, and when you file a claim, no matter whether it was a freak explosion, your fault accident, or someone else's fault, it counts against you on your insurance.
