Thumbs down Only in Ohio: Man shot and killed near vigil for slain son

Man shot and killed near vigil for slain son

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - A father was killed by gunfire Tuesday night after attending a prayer vigil in honor of his dead son who was shot and killed just days before.

Family members say Dwight Hardy, 34, had just attended a "stop the violence" vigil for his son, 16-year-old Kendrick Pope. Pope was slain last week behind the old Jefferson Montessori School on North Euclid Avenue. Tuesday would have been his 17th birthday.

Tuesday night's shootings happened just before 7 p.m. in the 1200 block of Catalpa Drive near Cambridge Avenue. Police found Hardy and another man shot inside a vehicle.

The other victim, believed to be 23 years old, was taken to a local hospital suffering from gunshot wounds to his leg and shoulder. His name and condition have not been released.

Residents in the neighborhood said they want the violence to stop.

"It's scary out here. You can't even walk your streets anymore. You can't even open your doors, and they are shooting at random. All those gunshots out here, no telling how many people could've got shot," said resident Toni Rutledge.

"It's a tragedy," said Dayton Police Sgt. Wendy Stiver. "It's very difficult for the neighborhood, the community, the police department, and or thoughts go out to the families."

Hardy's family said Pope's funeral will be held on Wednesday, and then they will make funeral plans for Hardy.

Police do not have suspects in either killing. If you have any information that could help police, call Crime Stoppers at 222-STOP.

Dayton(the city, not as much some of the suburbs) is pretty much a hole with a greatly reduced population comprised of those who cannot or will not escape.

More fun sucky Ohio news and facts! Maybe if we cannot be the crazy state, we can be the suckiest state..oh wait..forgot about West Virginia, Mississippi, etc. etc. Nevermind.

I lived in a kind of rural part outside the city but worked at a loan place for a while where we got a lot of the inner Dayton folks coming in. It was scary to hear them talking to one another right in front of us so casually about the person in the apartment next to them being shot in the head and some bullets coming through their wall where they were sitting with their kids. They could hear the screaming and everything but didn't call the cops or anything because the person deserved it and how they were going to hang out with the MURDERER later on and told the cops they didn't know the person.

Oh, the horror stories from that place...

Sounds like someone may have been in for a little revenge over something. I think it's a little to ironic that the son was killed, and then days later the father. I have to question that.
